A housing for medium voltage switchgear produced using this method is also disclosed. Preferably, at least some of the switchgear components, e.g. cable cone connectors 8, can pass through sealed openings in the housing. The coating alloy preferably comprises 0.3-3 wt% Mg, 0.6-3.5 wt% Al, optional < 0.2 wt% of one or more additional elements, unavoidable impurities, and balance Zn.
Description
Method for producing a housing for medium voltage switchgear and such a housing The invention relates to a method for producing a housing for medium voltage switchgear, Such housing is used to accommodate switchgear components such as for example vacuum interrupters, main busbars and change-over/earthing switches. Because the switchgear 1 0 components handle voltages of 500 Volts and higher, it is required that the components remain free of any dust or moist, especially when the components rely on air insulation.
Moist and dust can decrease the electrical insulation of air, which could result in internal arcing, causing the housing to explode and the switchgear components to get out of operation.
In order to avoid such ingress of moist and dust, the switchgear components are accommodated in a gas-tight housing. Such a housing could be achieved by bolting wall parts together and ensuring that a sealing is present between the abutting edges of the wall parts.
2 0 While the moist is kept away from the switchgear components, it will still have an effect on the outside of the housing. One could paint the housing, in order to provide a protective layer against the moist. However, the wall parts are typically cut out of sheet steel. When a paint layer is applied, also all the cut edges need to be provided with such a paint layer. If not, then corrosion by the moist could occur.
Another possibility is to manufacture the wall parts from stainless steel. However, this raises the production costs of the housing considerably.
It is an obj ect of the invention to provide an alternative method for producing a housing 3 0 according to the preamble.
This object is achieved with a method according to the invention, which method comprises the steps of: -providing steel wall parts and a cover, all coated with a zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium; -clamping the steel wall parts in position to embody a housing with an access opening; -laser welding the steel wall parts along the abutting edges; -arranging switchgear in the housing via the access opening; -arranging a cover on the access opening; and -laser welding the cover along the edges to the housing, such that a gas-tight housing is obtained.
1 0 The steel wall parts and cover being coated by a zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium, provides a cost effective and good corrosion protection.
The zinc alloy provides a cathodic protection, such that also small uncoated portions of the steel wall parts are protected. So, also if the coated wall parts are cut or if holes are aranged in the wall parts, these uncoated cut edges will still be protected.
The zinc alloy can be arranged to the steel wall parts and the cover (or the sheet steel from which the parts are cut) by for examp'e a known industrial hot dip galvanizing line.
According to the method of the invention, the wall parts and the cover are laser welded together to form a gas-tight housing. Laser welding is used because this welding method provides a nanow heat affected zone, which is only a few millimeters wide around the weld.
In this way, the coating will only be damaged over a limited area, The cathodic protection of the remaining coating will ensure that also the area of the weld will still be protected, even if this area is not covered by the zinc alloy Alternatively, for better conosion protection, all the laser welded edges could be coated with zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium.
Another advantage of laser welding is the relative small heat impact on the wall parts aiid cover, such that any thermal deformation is limited, In a very preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention the steel wall parts and the cover, are all coated with a zinc alloy consisting of -0.3 -3 weight% magnesium; -0.6-3.5 weight % aluminum; and -optional < 0,2 weight % of one or more additional elements; -unavoidable impurities; -the remainder being zinc.
This composition of the zinc alloy provides an effective corrosion protection.
Preferably the welds of the steel wall parts are arranged on the outside of the gas-tight housing. Laser welding of the housing is typically automated with a robot and access from the outside is easier, than from the inside.
Yet another embodiment of the method according to the invention comprises the steps of -arranging pass-through openings in the wall parts during providing of the wail parts; -during the step of arranging switchgear in the housing, sealing the pass-through openings with switchgear components, such as cable cone connector components.
The invention also relates to a housing for medium voltage switchgear, which housing comprises: -a number of steel wall parts arranged to enclose an internal space with an access opening; -a cover arranged over the access opening; and -switchgear arranged in the internal space; wherein the wall parts and the cover are coated with a zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium and wherein the wall parts and the cover are laser welded at the abutting edges to provide an gas-tight housing.
Preferably, at least one pass-through opening is arranged in at least one wall part and wherein 3 0 at least one switchgear component is extending sealingly through the at least one pass-through opening.
In order to connect the switchgear in the internal space pass-through switchgear components are aranged in the housing, which for example provides a connection for cables of an electrical device or for a power providing busbar. The switchgear component extending through the pass-through opening in the housing needs to ensure the gas-tightness of the housing.
Preferably, the coating layer on the wall parts and the cover is a zinc alloy consisting of -0.3 -3 weight °o magnesium; -0.6-3.5 weight % aluminum; and 1 0 -optional < 0.2 weight % of one or more additional elements -unavoidable impurities; -the remainder being zinc.
These and other features of the invention 4ll be elucidated in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of a housing according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a first step of the method according to the invention.
Figure 3 shows a cross sectional view of a second step of the method according to the invention.
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a third step of the method according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of a housing I according to the invention. This housing I has a top wall part 2, two side walls 3,4, a bottom wall partS and a bend front wall part 6. A cover plate 7 is arranged on the back of the housing 1.
The wall parts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are all welded together at the abutfing edges to provide a gas-tight housing 1, Cable cone connectors 8 arranged near the bottom in the front wall part 6 to provide electrical access to the switchgear arranged in the gas-tight housing L Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a first step of the method according to the invention, in this step the wall parts 2 -6, excluding the cover plate 7, are provided, preferably cut from a steel sheet coated with a zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium. The wall parts 2 -6 are clamped, such that a laser welding robot 9 can weld the wall parts 2 -6 together at the abutting edges.
Figure 3 shows a cross sectional view of a second step of the method according to the invention, In this step, the laser welded wall parts 2 -6 are positioned, such that switchgear components can be mounted in the internal space 10. The switchgear components are for example the cable cone connectors 8, busbars II, a vacuum interrupter 12 and earthing device 13.
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a third step of the method according to the invention.
When all the switchgear components 8, 11, 12, 13 are arranged in the housing 1, the housing is closed at the back by a cover 7, which is also welded by a laser welding robot 9 to the wall parts2-6.
Finally, all the laser welded edges could be coated with zinc alloy comprising aluminum and magnesium to provide a better corrosion protection to the welded edges.
