Abstract
256,979. Mathieson Alkali Works, (Assignees of Low, F. S.). Aug. 13, 1925, [Convention date]. Chrome tanning.-Tanning baths are prepared by dissolving in water anhydrous chromous chloride or anhydrous chromic chloride under conditions such that chromous chloride is produced. Soda is added from time to time during the tanning process after the first action is complete. When chromic chloride is. employed it is necessary to add thereto chromous chloride or a substance which will produce it to render the chromic chloride soluble and this may be effected by the addition of finely ground ferrochromium or zinc. The ferrochromium may be mixed in the dry state with the chromium chloride and so put on the market or a mixture of the two may be treated with enough water to form a paste and the resulting sintered mass dried and ground. The solution obtained by the use of ferrochromium as a reducing agent consists largely of chromous chloride from which the chromic form results by oxidation which may be hastened by passing air into the solution.
