Abstract

242,502. Hoe & Co., Ltd., R., (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.). March 10, 1925. Machines u s i n g continuous wire. - A . stapling machine particularly adapted to staple a printed sheet or web on its fold line is arranged to insert a line of staples either longitudinally of or transversely to, the direction of travel of the shoot or web, which may be stapled on the run. The stapling mechanism is shown applied to the deliverv end of a printing couple F, I and the stapled product may be a forwarded by tapes 12, 13 to a longitudinal chopper folder 140 or a transverse folder 143, 144. Two stapling mechanisms 95, 96 of ordinary construction are carried by a frame 23 mounted by pivots 24, 25, Fig. 4, in a fixed frame 19 - - 22 and adapted to be rotated on anti-friction rollers through an angle of 90‹ by means of gears 40, 41 and a hand-oper ated shaft 42, Fig. 3 A sleeve 27 rotatable on the bearing for the pivot 25 has a lower gear 29 in mesh with a gear 30 driven from the power shaft 39 of the printing machine and an upper gear 28 in mesh with a gear 73 which drives the stapling and clinching mechanisms. In order that the product may be stapled on the run the mechanisms are given a timed movement with the product. To this end the stapling mechanisms are carried by an inner frame 400 slidable on slides 49 which are themselves slidable in a transverse direction on bars 50 on the frame 23. For transverse stapling the frame 400 is moved along the slides 49 by means of racks 51, 52 on the frame which are engaged by gear segments 56, 57 operated through a link 61 by a cam 63. For longitudinal stapling the link 61 is disconnected and the slides 49 are moved on the bars 50 by racks 54 engaged by gear segments 64 operated by a, link 68 and cam 70. The staple forming and driving mechanisms are operated from a vertical shaft 78, Fig. 4, driven by the gear 73 before-mentioned. The clinching anvils 80, 81 are operated by cams 83 on shafts 84 driven by gears 86 on a shaft 85 geared to the shaft 78. The gears 86 are keyed to slide on the shaft 85 to allow of the movement of the frame 400 for longitudinal stapling. For transverse stapling the gears 86 are stationary on the shaft 85 but the movement of the frame 400 is allowed by the shafts 84 being keyed to slide in the hubs of their operating gears. The sitaple forming and insert. ing mechanisms 95, 96 are operated from the shaft 78 through a shaft 99 by gearing similar to that which operates the clinching anvils. Devices for registering the product, in correct stapling position comprise pairs of fingers 104, 104', 105, 106 and 107, 108. The fingers 107, 108 act as front stops for transverse stapling and as side stops for longitudinal-stapling and co-operate alternatively with the fingers 104, 104<1> or the fingers 105, 106. The fingers are given a jogging motion and slide with the stapling mechanisms. The fingers 107, 108, for example, are pivoted on a shaft 109, Fig. 9. and are operated through linkage 111, 112 by a shaft 113 rocked by a camfork 115 and a cam 117 keyed to slide on a shaft 103 driven from the shaft 99. The fingers 104, 104<1> and 105. 106 are similarly operated by cams 120, 129 keyed on the shaft 103. The cams for operating the fingers, the stapling mechanisms and clinching anvils are moved along their shafts by the cam forks engaging grooved collars on the cams. When the stapling mechanisms are turned from one position to another the tapes 12, 13 and the staple wires are rethreaded and the registering fingers are adjusted.
