Charging. - In a furnace for melting sulphur or like easily fusible material, means are provided for preventing entry of air or escape of gas during charging. As shown, the hopper 2, having a closely fitting cover 9, is arranged partly within the furnace 1 and communicates with a shoot 4 delivering into a siphon device 6, 7, 8. The charge in the lower part of the hopper is melted by contact with the heated wall 3 and the molten material fills the container 6 before enterring the furnacethrough the pipe 7.
