Abstract

A mobile telecommunications network including a core and a radio access network having radio means for wireless communication with mobile terminals 1412, 1414 registered with the network, wherein the radio access network includes control means (700, Fig. 6) operable to control the use of network resources by said mobile terminals, wherein the control means is operable to collect information relating to said mobile terminals 14A (e.g. location 14B, movement 14D) and to control the operation of external resources 14F, such as street furniture (1416, 1418, Fig. 12) in the vicinity of the each of the mobile terminals, in dependence on the information. The street furniture may include street lights and/or signs. Embodiments include dimming or turning off street lighting in areas with low density or few terminals to save energy or unnecessary carbon emissions, displaying adverts tailored to particular terminals in an area relating to the terminal(s), controlling CCTV cameras, including direction and focus of the cameras, in accordance with current or predicted locations of terminals, directing street cleaners or police or security personnel to areas of high density of terminals or predicted locations of terminals, displaying warning street/road signs for excess speed or for upcoming congestion/traffic jams, or for controlling the font/text size of signs in accordance with a detected speed of the terminals.
