Abstract

A golf club 2, which may be a usable club or a dummy club, has a head 4 and a hollow shaft 6. Within the head is a tracking device 8 which includes a battery and a lead 10 extending through the shaft to a charging socket 12 located within the top of the shaft at the handle or grip to receive a charging plug to recharge the battery. The club may be tracked via internet mapping solutions or a mobile phone network and the tracker may comprise GPS or GPRS or GSM means.

The present invention relates to tracking device for a golf club.
Golf clubs are increasingly becoming a target for theft from the premises of golf clubs as well normal households.
There are numerous designs of tracking devices currently available that comprise a GPS/GPRS/GSM transmitter/receiver that can be traced worldwide from any internet enabled computer to provide a mapping platform. In some cases, device can be traced simply by *: dialling the device from a mobile phone. The caller receives an SMS *::::* message that provides the street address and post code information : identifying the location of the device.
The present invention seeks to alleviate the problem with golf club theft by providing a golf club with a tracking device built in to the club :.. such that the location of a club, if lost or stolen, can be determined quickly and easily.
According to one aspect there is provided a golf club having a head and shaft, the head having located therein a tracking device capable of transmitting a signal to provide the location of the golf club in the event that club is lost or stolen.
By "golf club" it is meant to include a "dummy" golf club that has all the features of a golf club but is not necessarily suitable for use.
Preferably the tracking device can be tracked via internet mapping solutions. Preferably still the tracking device can be tracked via a mobile phone network.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying Figures in which Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a golf club including a tracking device constructed in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic expanded view of the head of the golf club of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a schematic expanded view of the shaft of the golf club of Figure 1.
As can be seen from the Figures, a golf club 2 has a head 4 and a hollow shaft 6. The golf club 2 is in fact a "dummy" golf club in the ". sense that it is designed to replicate a normal club but is not suitable for use. * ** * * * *.**

be located within the header 4) and generally consists of a GPS/GPRS/GSM receiver and transmitter.
The tracking device 8 includes a battery (not shown) for providing power to the device 8. The device 8 includes a lead 10 which extends through the shaft 6.
The lead 10 extends to a charging socket 12 located within the top of the shaft 6. The socket 12 is designed to receive a charging plug 14 to provide power to charge the battery of the device 8. The plug 14 is connectable to mains power supply.
When the battery is not being charged a cover 16 extends over the socket 12 so that the socket 12 is not visible to a user. The cover 16 extends to the grip 18 around the shaft 6. For example a tracking device could be moulded to the head of the club at some location which does not prevent the head being used normally.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of one embodiment of a golf club and tracking device according to the present invention and of just one form in which it may be used. Claims (8)

  1. Claims 1. A golf club having a head and shaft, the head having located therein a tracking device capable of transmitting a signal to provide the location of the golf club in the event that the club is lost or stolen.
  2. 2. A golf club according to claim 1, wherein the tracking device is arranged to be trackable via internet mapping solutions and/or via a mobile phone network.
  3. 3. A golf club according to claim I or claim 2, wherein the tracking device includes a lead that extends inside and along the shaft of the golf club.
  4. 4. A golf club according to claim 3, wherein the lead is connectable to a plug for supplying power to, or for recharging a battery of, the tracking device.
  5. 5. A golf club according to claim 4, further comprising a compartment having a cover integrally formed with the housing to allow access to the battery for replacement thereof.
