Abstract
A toothbrush with a reservoir handle 200, and in which fluid may be squeezed out of the reservoir to flow to the bristles 103 in the brush head 102. The fluid passes through a channel 104 in the shaft 101 to the base of the bristles through an orifice 105. This orifice is fitted with a liquid discharge control valve 106. The handle may be adapted to receive a separate cartridge. The head portion is fitted with a means 108 to puncture the seal of an attached cartridge. The fluid in the reservoir may be water, or water with an antiseptic or flavouring.
Description
TOOTIIBRUSH
The present invention relates to toothbrushes.
People when cleaning their teeth commonly have a tap running during the whole operation. Thus, much more water is used than strictly is necessary. Not only is this wasteful of water, which in certain areas may be in short supply, at least during the summer months, but in establishments to which the water supply is metered and charged accordingly, water bills are increased above those which could be achieved if less water was used during tooth cleaning operations.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved toothbrush which has the capability for reducing the amount of water used during the operation of cleaning one's teeth.
According to the present invention there is provided a toothbrush having a head portion including bristles and a handle, wherein the head portion is provided with a channel and an orifice through which water can be discharged hi the region of the said bristles and the handle includes a reservoir which can be brought into communication with the channel in the head portion of the toothbrush.
The handle of the toothbrush may be adapted to provide the said reservoir or it may be adapted to receive a separate cartridge of water. In the latter case, preferably the cartridge I' is sealed and there is included means for puncturing the seal when the cartridge of water is attached to the handle of the toothbrusk Preferably there is provided a valve for controlling the flow of water from the reservoir to the discharge orifice in the head of the toothbrush.
The invention WI!! now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a front view of the head portion of a toothbrush embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of a handle portion for use with the toothbrush head portion shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a side view of the handle portion shown in Figure 2, and Figure 4 is a side view of a separate cartridge water reservoir for use in performing the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, a head portion 100 of a toothbrush embodying the invention has a shaft 101 and a head 102 which is provided with bristles 103, in the usual way. A channel 104 passes through the shaft 101 and terminates in the head 102 at an orifice 105, which is provided with a liquid discharge control valve 106. The end of the shaft 101 of the head portion 100 of the toothbrush terminates in a collar 107 from which projects a hollow spike 108. The collar 107 is provided also with two fixing lugs 109 and a sealing 0' ringgasket 110.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, a handle 200 for use with the head portion of the toothbrush is hollow and has a neck 201 which is provided with two lugs 202 which co-operate with the lugs 109 on the collar 107 of the shaft 101 of the handle portion 100 of the toothbrush, so as to enable the handle 200 to be attached to and detached from, the head portion 101 of the toothbrush. The material from which the handle 200 is made is flexible enough to enable the handle 200 to be squeezed so as to expel liquid contained within it into the head portion 100 of the toothbrush and thence, via the orifice 105 and control valve 106, into the mouth of a person using the toothbrush.
The hollow handle 200 can itself provide a reservoir for water, or a separate squeezable reservoir can be used. As shown, the handle 200 is intended for use with a separate reservoir and one such is shown in Figure 4. When intended for use with a separate reservoir, the handle 200 has to be openable so as to enable the separate reservoir to be inserted into and removed from, the handle 200 of the toothbrush.
The reservoir 400, shown in Figure 4, is provided with two locating rings 401 which co- * erate with corresponding annular grooves 203 in the inner surface 204 of the neck 201 of the handle 200 of the toothbrush. The reservoir 400 initially is sealed by a membrane, not visible in Figure 4, which is punctured by the spike 108 which projects from the end of the shaft 101 of the head portion of the toothbrush when the handle 200 and reservoir 400 are attached to the head portion 100 of the toothbrush.
The fact that the volume of the reservoir, whether provided by the handle 200 itself; or a separate reservoir, is limited, restricts the amount of water which is used at any one time of usage of the toothbrush. An advantage of the use of a separate reservoir is that the usage of the toothbrush in situations where the water supply is limited, or of doubtful purity, is facilitated. Also, the water in the reservoir may include an anti-septic, or flavour.
Claims (6)
1. A toothbrush having a head portion including bristles and a handle, wherein the head portion is provided with a channel and an orifice through which water can be discharged in the region of the said bristles and the handle includes a reservoir which can be brought into communication with the channel in the head portion of the toothbrush.
2. A toothbrush according to claim I wherein the handle of the toothbrush is deformable so as to enable a liquid contained in the said reservoir to be expelled from the reservoir into the head portion of the toothbrush.
3. A toothbrush according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the handle of the toothbrush is adapted to receive a separate reservoir of liquid.
4. A toothbrush according to claim I or claim 2 wherein the handle of the toothbrush is adapted to provide the said reservoir.
5. A toothbrush according to any preceding claim wherein there is provided a valve for conirolling the flow of liquid from the reservoir to the said orifice in the head portion of the toothbrush.
6. A toothbrush substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying diawings.
