Television broadcast signals of a channel searched by a main picture receiving station 5 are received to display them on a first area in the form of a moving picture. Television broadcast signals of channels other than the channel of said main picture receiving station 5 are received and stored to insert them into the television broadcast signals of said main picture receiving station 5 in a form of a PIP so as to display them on the partitioned areas in a sequential manner starting from a second area and in a form of a still picture. The steps are repeated starting from the second step upon encountering a last channel at the third step.
Description
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DISPLAYING
BROADCAST SIGNALS OF SEARCHED CHANNEL
IN IMAGE RECEIVING APPARATUS
The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for displaying broadcast signals of searched channels, in which the television broadcast signals for an automatically searched channel are displayed in a form of
PIP (picture in picture).
Generally, the television broadcast signals are transmitted through a plurality of channels having different band widths.
For example, Korea, the United States, Japan and other countries of the world use the NTSC (National
Television System Committee) - M method. In this NTSC-M method, VHF (very high frequency) bands of 54-88 MHz and 174-216 MHz and UHF (ultra-high) frequency) bands of 470890 MHz are respectively allocated with band widths of 6
MHz. They are allocated to channels 2 to 83. In the broadcasting station, the television signals are transmitted through the frequency band of the set channel.
In the image receiving apparatuses such as television receiver, video cassette tape recorder and the like which receive the television signals, if the electric field intensity of a channel is strong, then the adjacent channel is affected.
Therefore, the image of the adjacent channel is adversely influenced. Therefore, when allocating the channels, the adjacent channels are avoided, so that the currently received television signals would not be affected by the adjacent channels.
That is, in a particular channel, the channels which are higher or lower than this channel by 1 are avoided.
If two adjacent broadcasting stations transmit television signals through the same channel, then interference occurs between the two sets of signals, and therefore, the reception becomes impossible.
Therefore, in the case where two television stations are adjacent, the two sets of television signals are transmitted through different channels. Therefore, television stations located in different districts use different channels.
Under this condition, if a user checks the channels one by one so as to see which channels have images, this will be a troublesome task.
Therefore, the television receivers are provided with automatic search functions. If a user selects the automatic search function, the channels which hold television signals are automatically searched and stored.
When the channel raising key and the channel lowering key is pressed, only the stored channels are selected, thereby making it possible to receive the television signals in an automatic manner.
However, if a particular channel is to be selected, a user has to manipulate the channel raising key or the channel lowering key repetitively, and therefore, the troublesome task still remains.
It is an aim of preferred embodiments of the present invention to overcome or reduce the above described disadvantage of the conventional technique.
It is an aim of embodiments of the present invention to provide an apparatus and a method for displaying the broadcasting signals of searched channels, in which when an automatic search function is completed, the broadcast signals of the searched channels are displayed in the form of PIP, so that the user can select the desired channel in a simple manner.
According to an aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for displaying broadcast signals of searched channels in an image receiving apparatus, comprising the steps of: (i) receiving television broadcast signals of all channels in a sequential manner in accordance with an automatic search command, to store channels having television broadcast signals; (ii) partitioning a display screen into a plurality of areas upon completion of the automatic search at (i), and receiving television broadcast signals of a given channel searched by a main picture receiving section to display them in a first partitioned area in moving picture form; (iii) receiving and storing television broadcast signals of subsequent channels other than the channel of said main picture receiving section, and inserting them into the television broadcast signals of said main picture receiving section in a form of PIP so as to display them in subsequent respective partitioned areas in a sequential manner starting from a second area and in still picture form; (iv) when a last partitioned area has been allocated to a given channel in (iii) and if further subsequent channels still remain and have not yet been allocated, then television broadcast signals of a next remaining channel are received by said main picture receiving section to display them on the first area in a form of a moving picture, and broadcast signals of subsequent remaining channels are thereafter received and stored by the receiving section to insert them into the television broadcast signals of said main picture receiving section in the form of PIP so as to display them in a sequential manner starting from the second area.
Preferably, when a last channel is encountered at (iii), the steps starting from step (ii) are repeated.
Preferably, at step (i), the presence of television broadcast signals is judged by the presence of synchronizing signals.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided an apparatus for displaying broadcast signals of searched channels, comprising: a microcomputer for controlling automatic searches of channels having television broadcast signals, and for controlling displays of the television broadcast signals of the searched channels; an operation command inputting section for inputting operation commands into said microcomputer in accordance with manipulations of a user; an LNA (low noise amplifier) for low-noise-amplifying reception signals received through an antenna; a main picture receiving section for receiving television signals of a channel under a control of said microcomputer from output signals of said LNA; a video signal processing section for processing output signals of said main picture receiving section; the apparatus further comprising: a synchronizing signal detecting section for detecting presence or absence of synchronizing signals from CVBS (component video blanking signals) of said video signal processing section so as to supply them into said microcomputer; a PIP receiving section for receiving television broadcast signals of channels under a control of said microcomputer from output signals of said LNA; a demodulating section for demodulating the CVBS from output signals of said PIP receiving section; a decoder for decoding output signals of said demodulating section or external CVBS inputted through audio/video terminals so as to output brightness signals and chromaticity signals; and a PIP controller for storing output signals of said decoder, and inserting the output signals of said decoder into the brightness signals and the chromaticity signals of said video signal processing section before outputting them.
According to aspects of the invention described herein, there is provided an apparatus for displaying the broadcasting signals of searched channels including: a main picture tuner section for receiving television broadcast signals of the main picture; and a PIP tuner section for receiving television signals to be displayed in a form of PIP.
When the user selects an automatic search function, the main picture tuner section receives the television broadcast signals of every channel in a sequential manner.
Then synchronizing signals are detected from among the received broadcast signals, and judgements are made as to the presence or absence of the broadcast signals. Then the channels in which the synchronizing signals are detected are stored.
When the automatic search is completed, the displaying screen is partitioned into a plurality of areas, and then, the main picture tuner section receives the television broadcast signals of one channel among the automatically searched channels to display the signals in one of the plurality of the areas in the form of a moving picture.
The PIP tuner section receives television broadcast signals of channels other than the channel received by the main picture tuner section at certain time intervals.
Then the received television broadcast signals are stored into a memory, and the stored signals are displayed into the respective partitioned areas.
Therefore, in the present invention, the user can confirm the television broadcast signals of the respective channels, and the desired channel can be easily selected.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how embodiments of the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the circuit of the apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a signal flow chart showing an embodiment of the displaying method according to the present invention;
Figure 3 illustrates an example of displaying television broadcast signals of searched channels on a screen based on the displaying method of the present invention; and
Figure 4 illustrates another example of displaying television broadcast signals on a screen based on the displaying method of the present invention.
The present invention will be described in detail referring to the attached drawings.
Figure 1 illustrates the circuit of the apparatus according to the present invention. As shown in this drawing, the apparatus for displaying the broadcasting signals of searched channels according to the present invention includes: a microcomputer 1 for controlling the automatic searching of channels having television broadcast signals, and for controlling displays of the television broadcast signals of the searched channels; an operation command inputting section 2 for inputting operation commands into the microcomputer 1 in accordance with manipulations of a user: an LNA (low noise amplifier) 4 for low-noise-amplifying reception signals received through an antenna 3; a main picture receiving section 5 for receiving television signals of a channel under control of the microcomputer 1 from output signals of the
LNA 4; a video signal processing section 6 for processing output signals of the main picture receiving section 5; a synchronizing signal detecting section 7 for detecting presence or absence of synchronizing signals from CVBS (component video blanking signals) of the video signal processing section 6 so as to supply them to the microcomputer 1; a PIP receiving section 8 for receiving television broadcast signals of channels under control of the microcomputer 1 from output signals of the LNA 4; a demodulating section 9 for demodulating the CVBS from output signals of the PIP receiving section 8; a decoder 10 for decoding output signals of the demodulating section 9 or external CVBS input through audio/video terminals so as to output brightness signals Y and chromaticity signals
U and V; and a PIP controller 12 for storing output signals of the decoder 10, and for inserting the output signals of the decoder 10 into the brightness signals Y and the chromaticity signals U and V of the video signal processing section 6 before outputting them.
In the apparatus of the present invention constituted as described above, if a user manipulates a function key of the image receiving apparatus or a function key of a remote controller, then the operation command inputting section 2 outputs the operation command to supply it to the microcomputer 1.
The microcomputer 1 judges on the operation command of the operation command inputting section 2, and executes the relevant operation.
If the inputted operation command is the execution of the automatic search function, the microcomputer 1 carries out a control in such a manner that the main picture receiving section 5 should receive the television broadcast signals of the respective channels in a sequential manner.
Then the main picture receiving section 5 receives the television broadcast signals of the respective channels from among the television broadcast signals which have been inputted after being low-noise-amplified by the
LNA 4.
The television broadcast signals which have been received by the main picture receiving section 5 are processed by the video signal processing section 6, and then are displayed on the screen.
The synchronizing signal detecting section 7 detects the presence of synchronizing signals among the CVBS as output of the video signal processing section 6. The detected signals are supplied to the microcomputer 1.
Then the microcomputer 1 judges on the presence of television broadcast signals based on the output signals of the synchronizing signal detecting section 7. After the judgements, the channels having television broadcast signals are stored.
Under this condition, when the automatic search function is completed, that is, when the television broadcast signals are received up to the last channel, and when the channels having synchronizing signals are all stored after judging on the presence of synchronizing signals, the microcomputer 1 controls the main picture receiving section 5, so that the first one of the automatically searched channels can be received.
The television broadcast signals of the first channel which have been received by the main picture receiving section 5 are outputted through the video signal processing section 6 so as to be displayed on the screen.
Further, the microcomputer 1 controls the PIP tuner section 8, so that the television broadcast signals of all the rest of the channels can be received at certain time intervals.
The television broadcast signals which have been received by the PIP tuner section are supplied to the demodulating section 9. Thus, the CVBS are demodulated, and the brightness signals Y and the chromaticity signals
U and V are decoded by the decoder 10, while the decoded signals are input into the PIP controller 12.
The PIP controller 12 partitions the image displaying screen into a plurality of areas under a control of the microcomputer 1. Further, the PIP controller 12 stores the brightness signals Y and the chromaticity signals U and V of the television broadcast signals into the memory 11 after they have been outputted from the decoder 10.
Further, the television broadcast signals of the memory 11 are inserted into the brightness signals Y and the chromaticity signals U and V of the video signal processing section 6 so as to be displayed on the different areas of the screen.
Figure 2 is a signal flow chart showing the displaying method according to the present invention. As shown in this drawing, if there is an automatic search command at a step S1, then the automatic search function is executed at a step S2.
Then at a step S3, a judgement is made as to whether the automatic search has been completed. If the automatic search function has not been completed at the step S3, then the step S2 is repeated to continuously search for these channels having television broadcast signals.
If the automatic search has been completed at the step S3, the PIP controller 12 partitions the screen into a plurality of PIP areas under a control of the microcomputer 1.
For example, the screen is partitioned into 13 areas (PR1 - PRl3 as shown in Figure 3), or the screen is partitioned into 16 PIP areas (PR1 - PR16 as shown in
Figure 4).
At a step S5, a value "1" is stored into a channel variable CH to be received. At a step S6, a value "1" is stored into an area variable PR. At a step S7, the main picture receiving section 5 receives television broadcast signals of the first channel, i.e., the channel of the channel variable CH.
At a step S8, the television broadcast signals of the first channel are displayed on the first area, i.e., the area of the area variable PR1.
At a step S9, a value "1" is added to the channel variable CH. At a step S10, a value "1" is added to the area variable PR. At a step Sll, the PIP receiving section 8 receives the television broadcast signals of a channel corresponding to the next channel variable CH, that is, receives the television broadcast signals of the second channel.
At a step S12, the received television broadcast signals are stored into the memory 11.
At a step S13, the stored television broadcast signals are inserted into the television broadcast signals of the main picture receiving section 5, so that the former signals can be displayed on the area of the next area variable PR, i.e., on the second area PR2.
At a step S14, a judgement is made as to whether it is the last channel. If it is not the last channel, the number of the total partitioned areas is compared with the channel variable CH at a step S15.
If the channel variable CH is not equal to the total number of the partitioned areas at the step S15, then it is repeated from the step S9. In this manner, the television broadcast signals of the automatically searched channels are received in a sequential manner and they are stored in the memory 11. At the same time, they are displayed in the partitioned areas PR2 - PR13 or PR2 PR16 in the form of a still picture.
That is, in the case where the image displaying screen is partitioned into 13 areas as shown in Figure 3, the television broadcast signals which have been received by the PIP receiving section 8 and have been stored in the memory 11 are displayed in the display areas PR2 - PR13 in a sequential manner. Meanwhile, in the case where the image displaying screen is partitioned into 16 areas as shown in Figure 4, the television broadcast signals which have been received by the PIP receiving section 8 and have been stored in the memory 11 are displayed in the display areas PR2 - PR16 in a sequential manner.
At the step S15, if it is found that the channel variable CH is equal to the total number of the partitioned areas, then at a step S16, the area variable
PR is reset to "0". Then it is repeated starting from the step S7, so that the television broadcast signals of the main picture section 5 can be displayed on the area PR1 In the form of a moving picture, and that the television broadcast signals which have been received by the PIP receiving section 8 and have been stored in the memory 11 can be displayed in the display areas PR2 - PR13 or PR2 PR16 in a sequential manner.
Under this condition, if it is the last channel at the step S14, then it is repeated starting from the step
S5, so that television broadcast signals of the automatically searched channels can be displayed in a sequential manner.
According to the present invention as described above, when an automatic search function is completed, the broadcast signals of the searched channels are displayed in the form of PIP, so that the user can select the desired channel in a simple manner.
