Abstract
An apparatus for sealing seams of footwear or clothing comprises a sealant applicator with an applicator surface, a cantilevered swivel arm 10 and a support surface 17 for the seam located at the free end of the swivel arm. The support means may be a roller 15 with a convex surface and the sealant applicator a roller 21 with a concave surface. The swivel arm is supported via a pivot arm 11 such that it can rotate about an axis 16 which passes through the support roller, which thus remains substantially in one position. In use, a boot or other item is placed over the swivel arm so that the support roller presses against one side of the seam to be sealed. The sealant applicator is placed on the other side of the seam to be sealed and the item is manipulated between the rollers so that sealant is applied to the seam. The sealant may be a tape or a hot melt adhesive.
Description
Seam Sealing
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for sealing seams. The invention is particularly concerned with seam sealing of footwear, especially waterproof, breathable footwear.
Waterproof breathable materials generally comprise thin membraneous materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or polyurethanes which are porous. PTFE may be produced as described in US Patent No. 3,953,566.
These materials may be coated with an oleophobic coating.
According to previously known methods of manufacturing footwear, in order that a shoe should be fully watertight, a bootee of a relatively soft waterproof breathable material is produced around which the shoe is constructed.
The bootee has an opening for the foot and is formed from two side portions and a sole portion, wherein joins are generally butt-edged, secured with zig-zag stitching and the seams are sealed. The bootee can then be pre-tested for leaks before being put into the final shoe. Typically the bootee can be formed with a conformable low layer laminate. From the outside inwards, this laminate comprises: a layer of nylon knit, a membrane with oleophobic coating, a foam layer and an inner fabric lining to lie adjacent the foot.
However, the flexible nature of the bootee can cause difficulty in subsequently aligning the bootee on a last in order to allow the upper and outer sole to be attached.
Patent Application No. GB 9203714.2 discloses an alternative method of forming the footwear, which involves the step of lasting an upper portion around the periphery of a midsole and sealing the overlapping margin with seam sealing tape to ensure water tightness of the seam.
Seam sealing is a known technique which is currently used for sealing the seams of waterproof garments and bootees used for waterproof footwear. A tape of width 1-2cm is adhered under pressure from a pressure roller.
Special adhesives which adhere to the PTFE membrane are required and a suitable pressure must be employed to force the adhesive into the structure of the PTFE membrane. In order to achieve a satisfactory result, careful control of the conditions under which the tape is applied is required.
Whereas seam sealing can be applied to conformable items such as bootees or garments, it has not been practical or possible to apply seam sealing tape satisfactorily to nonconformable items and lasted footwear.
In the case of footwear produced according to GB 9203714.2 it is not necessary for the part assembled shoe to be removed from the last on which it is being assembled for the seam sealing operation to be carried out. Therefore it is not necessary for the last to be reinserted after seam sealing to allow completion of the shoe assembly process. However, due to the requirement of a last for every shoe throughout manufacture this process is expensive in time and effort and adds to the cost of footwear produced in this way.
Furthermore in the case of shoes made of nonconformable materials, and particularly in the case of waterproof boots, such as mountaineering boots, it has proved difficult to satisfactorily seam seal around the midsole of the shoe or boot because of the irregular shape of the items to be sealed.
It has previously been proposed to provide an apparatus for applying seam sealing tape to an item of footwear mounted on a last, the apparatus comprising a moveable table having a last and clamping means, and tape applicator means comprising pressure roller means.
The table can move transversely and longitudinally with respect to the applicator means.
This apparatus is cumbersome, requires the use of a last to maintain the shape of the shoe and does not address the problem of ensuring satisfactory sealing around the irregular shape of the shoe.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome problems associated with seam sealing of waterproof breathable footwear and other items of waterproof breathable material.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for seam sealing a peripheral seam on an item, the apparatus comprising: - sealant applicator means having an applicator surface, - a swivel arm cantilevered from a first end thereof, and - a support means located at or near the free, second end of said swivel arm, said support means having a support surface conforming to said applicator surface, said swivel arm being rotatably supported at its first end, such that the swivel arm is rotatable about an axis of rotation which extends substantially through said support means, wherein the swivel arm extends away from the support means at an angle to said axis of rotation.
The apparatus may comprise a concave applicator surface and a convex support surface.
Alternatively the apparatus may comprise a convex applicator surface and a concave support surface.
This arrangement may be particularly useful for seam sealing an item which is inside out such that the sealant or tape will be hidden when the item is worn.
This seam sealing step may take place off a last.
Suitably the item is an item of footwear.
Preferably the sealant is tape. Most preferably the sealant is a glue backed tape. The tape must be waterproof after gluing. Preferably the tape width is 1-2cm.
Alternatively the sealant may be a hot melt adhesive which is applied directly over the seam.
Preferably the convex support surface is in the form of a support roller mounted at the end of an angled extension head at the end of the swivel arm. The support roller may be a spherical ball. Preferably the support roller is driven to rotate to aid smooth movement of the item of footwear. Preferably the support roller and the pivotable arm rotate about the same axis.
Preferably the sealant applicator means comprises a concave top roller. Most preferably the top roller is silicone.
Preferably the pivot arm and swivel arm are pneumatically operated. This operation may be activated using a knee valve effecting a cylinder within the pivot arm, thereby applying pressure to either or both sides of the arm depending on the required position.
Preferably the speed of rotation can be manipulated.
This may be effected via a knee operated valve and by mechanical restrictions.
Preferably the position of the sealant applicator means can be vertically adjusted.
Preferably this adjustment can be operated via a motor driven quill arrangement.
Preferably the silicone roller is chain driven via the motor driven quill arrangement.
Quill position and pressure may be regulated via a knee operated valve.
Preferably the swivel arm and pivot arm form an angle of between 30e to 70". Most preferably they form an angle of 40 to 60".
An extension head may be provided at the free end of the swivel arm, and preferably is at an angle of between 110 and 1600 to the swivel arm.
The lengths of the swivel arm and the extension head are dependent on the items to be sealed.
Whereas the apparatus is particularly suitable for seam sealing an item of footwear, it may also be employed to seam seal gloves and mitts. The apparatus according to the present invention will be of particular use for items which have thumb, finger, toe or heel like portions. It may be suitable for items for use in shooting, military, backpacking and mountaineering circles. However, it may also suitable be used where the finish and line of garment is aesthetically important.
Seams which are sealed by apparatus according to the present invention will have a more natural position of tape rather than stiff flat tape.
The apparatus may take different sizes for sealing children's footwear and adult footwear.
The invention also provides a method for seam sealing an item of footwear or clothing comprising the steps of: - mounting the item on a cantilevered swivel arm which is adapted to swivel in such a way that the free end of the swivel arm remains substantially stationary, - holding the inner periphery of a portion of said item against a support surface at the free end of said swivel arm, - positioning the applicator surface of a tape applicator means on the outer periphery of said portion of said item, - passing the inner periphery of the item past the support surface such that tape is applied along the outer periphery.
Further embodiments of the apparatus and method according to the invention are defined in the appended claims.
The invention further provides items of footwear which have been seam sealed according to the present invention.

convex surfaces of the rollers of the
apparatus.
Figure 8 is a detail of the pivot arm showing the
movement of the pivot arm.
Figure 9 illustrates an alternative embodiment
of the apparatus wherein the positions
of the concave and convex surfaces are
reversed.
Fig 1 illustrates a typical boot shape 1 wherein the middle sole 2 of the boot has been strobel stitched 3 to the upper 4 to form a seam 5. In order to ensure that the boot is waterproof a waterproof sealant, in this case sealing tape 6, is applied over the seam 5.
The apparatus according to the present invention has a swivel arm 10 which is connected at its lower end to a pivot arm 11 (illustrated in Fig 6) by means of a rigid connecting piece 12. The swivel arm 10 is connected at its upper end at a fixed angle to an extension head 14.
The swivel arm 10 is angled such that when the boot 1 is placed over the swivel arm 10, the angled extension head 14 can reach around the periphery inside the boot 1, even up into the toe area 7. The extension head (shown in detail in Fig 7) has a roller 15 mounted on a rotational axis 16. The roller 15 has a spherical external surface 17, typically having a radius of curvature of 12.5mm.
Positioned above the extension head 14 is a silicone sealant applicator 20 which is fixed to a quill head which may be adjusted in vertical position only. The applicator includes a cylindrical rubber roller 21 having a concave surface 22 with a radius of curvature the same as that of the spherical external surface 17 of the extension head roller 15. The two rollers 15 and 21 are arranged on parallel axes and aligned such that there is a small gap between the corresponding surfaces of the rollers.
The axis 16 of the extension head roller 15 can remain in a fixed position, such that the convex roller surface 17 rotates without translation relative to the concave surface 22 of the sealant applicator roller 21, and the swivel arm 10 moves as shown in Figure 2 to position 10' such that the seam around the boot 1 can be moved gradually past the applicator 20. Because of the angled shape of the swivel arm 10 and extension head 14, and the spherical shape of the extension head roller 15, the boot can be moved smoothly around the spherical roller 15 and tape 6 can be applied around the entire outer periphery of the boot 1.
The angles between the pivot arm 11, the swivel arm 10 and the extension head 14 are chosen such that the extension head reaches into the toe area 7 of the boot, and the inner periphery of the boot 1 can be moved around the extension head 14.
The position of the swivel arm 10 is determined by the drive pivot arm 11 which pivots about a pivot point 13 between two extreme positions indicated by lla and llc in Figure 3, through a central position llb. In a particular embodiment of the apparatus a pneumatically powered cylinder in the drive of the pivot arm 10 can be driven by pressure applied on two sides. When equal pressure is applied on each side, the pivot arm 10 is in the central position llb, whereas pressure on one side causes the arm to pivot to position lla and pressure on the other side pivots the arm through the central position llb to position llc.The pivot arm 11 moves through an angle of 90 , (i.e. 45" on either side of the central position llb) to enable the boot 1 to be moved around on the swivel arm 10 whilst keeping both the concave 22 and convex 17 surfaces in contact with the boot 1 whilst the tape 6 is being applied.
Figure 4 illustrates the application of tape 6, with the boot 1, supported on the convex rotating driven roller 15 of the extension head 14, being in contact with tape 6 being applied in the concave roller of the applicator means 20. The concave and convex shapes accommodate the natural shape of the boot and permit satisfactory waterproof sealing to be reliably applied without puckering or other problems encountered with previous types of apparatus.
Figure 5(a) and 5(b) illustrate the side and front views respectively of the apparatus 50 according to the invention. In this embodiment the apparatus is pneumatically operated and incorporates a main drive which drives the extension head roller 15 and a quill drive which drives the tape applicator roller 21.
With reference to Figure 6, the main drive takes power from the motor drive 51 to a cross drive 52 whose speed may be regulated. The cross drive 52 incorporates a drive shaft 53 and sprocket 54, which drives a chain 55 extending along the pivot arm 11. The drive is transmitted from the chain 55 via a second sprocket and a Hookes joint 56 to an angular drive shaft 57 extending along the swivel arm 10. At the upper end of the swivel arm 10, shown in more detail in Figure 7, the drive is transferred via a second Hookes joint 58 and a toothed sprocket 59 to a toothed drive belt 60, which in turn drives the extension head roller 15 by means of a further toothed sprocket 61.
The quill drive may also take power from the motor drive 51 via a drive shaft 62 whose speed may be regulated, as indicated in Figure 5. The drive shaft 62 drives a chain 63 which extends along the quill head 8 and in turn drives the sealant applicator roller 21.
The arrangement of the pivot arm, swivel arm and extension head is illustrated in detail in Figure 6, wherein the swivel arm 10 is fixed at an angle of 48e to the pivot arm 11 by the connecting piece 12, and the extension head 14 extends at an angle of 135" from the swivel arm 10.
At the top of the extension head the spherical drive ball or roller 15 pivots on the same centre line axis 16 as the pivot arm 11. Figure 7 illustrates the extension head 14 in detail, showing the drive belt arrangement and the relationship between the convex surface 17 of the extension head and the concave surface 22 of the quill arrangement.
In use, as the drive pivot arm 11 moves between the two extreme positions lla and llc as shown in Figure 8, the extension head roller 15 remains in the same position relative to the quill arrangement, and the swivel arm 10 moves such that a boot 1 can be manipulated on the extension head 14 as tape 6 is being applied from a tape dispenser 30. A cylinder pivot arm 23 is fixed to the drive pivot arm lla at a constant angle (in this case at right angles). The end 24 of the cylinder pivot arm 23 is linked by a clevis 25 to the spindle of a hydraulic pressure cylinder 26. The pressure cylinder 26 acts on the cylinder pivot arm 23 such as to rotate the pivot arm 23 and hence rotate the swivel arm 10 up to 45 from the vertical. When the drive pivot arm is in position llc, the cylinder pivot arm adopts the position 23' shown in dotted outline. The pressure cylinder 26 may be actuated by knee pads 27, since the operator's hands will be involved in moving the boot 1. Knee pads 28 can also effect movement of the quill arrangement into contact with the boot by means of the quill pressure cylinder 29, when it is required to position the quill head 8 on the extension head 14.
Figure 9 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the invention wherein the tape applicator roller 21 has a convex surface 22' instead of a concave surface, and the extension head roller 14 has a concave surface 17' instead of a convex surface. When an item to be sealed is turned inside out, the apparatus shown in
Figure 9 permits the items to be seam sealed such that when it is returned to its normal state, the seam sealant tape or adhesive is hidden. This is of particular advantage in seam sealing gloves or mittens or items of clothing where a curved seam will be obtained as opposed to a square seam which would result from using flat tape.
Either or both of the support surface and applicator may comprise, a profiled external surface of a toothed belt instead of a roller. The belt, for example of silicone rubber, may be supported by a drive wheel at one end and a support wheel at the other end adjacent to the seam to be sealed.
It will be appreciated that the actual operation of the device can be altered without departing from the scope of the invention.
