Abstract

Ores of lead, zinc, copper, silver &c. are treated with hydrochloric acid gas or an iron chloride in presence of steam at about 150-200 DEG C. so as to obtain chlorides of the metals which are leached out with water, or, in the case of lead and silver with a solution of sodium, calcium or magnesium chloride. When using hydrochloric acid, this may be obtained by calcining an iron chloride at 150-200 DEG C. The chlorides obtained are treated in any suitable manner to recover the metals, the chlorine being combined with scrap iron so as to obtain iron chloride for re-use. If the metal chlorides are treated electrolytically, iron anodes may be used in a diaphragm cell, or, alternatively, insoluble anodes in an open cell in which case the evolved chlorine is led over metallic iron to produce the chloride. The process of chloridizing the ores in the presence of iron chloride renders any arsenic present insoluble and non-volatile by combining it with the iron, probably as ferric arsenate.
