Abstract
A blank (1) of stiff get foldable sheet material for assembly about an article to be packaged comprises a rectangular bottom panel (2) having spaced apart and parallel first and second sides (3,4) and spaced apart and parallel third and fourth sides (5,6), first and second side flaps (7,8) foldably joined to the bottom panel along said first and second sides, respectively, and first and second end flaps (9,10) foldably joined to the bottom panel along said third and fourth sides, respectively, the end flaps being dimensioned so that a first end portion (9a) of the first end flap overlies a second end portion (10a) of the second end flap when an article to be packaged is placed on an upwardly facing surface of the bottom panel and the side flaps and then the second end flap and then the first end flap are folded over on top of the article. The blank further comprises adhesive means (13) on the upwardly facing surface of, and extending across, the first end portion (9a) of the first end flap and a removable backing sheet (14) covering the adhesive means. Opposed edges of the second end portion of the second end flap have cut out regions (11,12) positioned so that, on folding the flaps (9,10) over into their article packaging positions, the adhesive means (13) overlies the cut out regions (11,12) whereby on removal of the backing sheet (14) the first end portion (9a) can be adhered to the underlying second end portion (10a) and parts of the side flaps beneath the cut out regions (11,12). The end portions (9a, 10a) may be of reduced thickness to overlap as a rebated joint.
Description
( Packaging This invention relates to packaging and in particular to a
packaging blank 5 made of stiff yet foldable sheet material, for example double faced corrugated board. The invention also relates to a package comprising an article and a folded packaging blank folded around the article.
In the packaging of a flat article, such as a furniture pack or "flatpack" 10 comprising one or more boards, e.g. chipboards, for assembly into an article of furniture, it is known to wrap a pre-creased blank of stiff yet foldable sheet material around the article to be packaged. Such a packaging blank has a rectangular bottom panel on which the article to be packaged is placed and which forms a bottom wall of the package, a pair of 15 side flaps which are foldably joined to the bottom panel about a first pair of opposed sides of the bottom panel and which are intended to be folded over to be positioned on top of the article, and a pair of end flaps which are foldably joined to the bottom panel about a second pair of opposed sides of the bottom panel and which are intended to be folded over on top of the 20 folded over side flaps so as to Some a top wall of the package. The end flaps when folded over may have abutting edges or may at least partly overlap one another. In either case it is necessary to secure, e.g. adhesively join, the end flaps to the underlying side flaps. If the end flaps overlap each other it is also necessary to secure, e.g. adhesively join, together the 25 overlapping parts of the folded over end flaps.
There are two main problems associated with the known packaging described above. Firstly to achieve a fully sealed and secured package it is necessary to join together, e.g. adhesively, each end flap along the full 30 length of the side flaps. If the end flaps overlap one another it is also necessary to join together, e.g. adhesively, the overlapping portions of the end flaps. Secondly, in the case where the end flaps partly overlie one another, there will be a step where the edge of the outermost end flap overlies the innermost end flap.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide improved packaging that addresses one or more of the above problems.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a blank 40 of stiff yet foldable sheet material for assembly about an article to be packaged, the blank comprising a rectangular bottom panel having spaced
apart and parallel first and second sides and spaced apart and parallel third and fourth sides, first and second side flaps foldably joined to the bottom panel along said first and second sides, respectively, and first and second end flaps foldably joined to the bottom panel along said third and 5 fourth sides, respectively, the end flaps being dimensioned so that a first end portion of the first end flap overlies a second end portion of the second end flap when an article to be packaged is placed on an upwardly facing surface of the bottom panel and the side flaps and then the second end flap and then the first end flap are folded over on top of the article, 10 characterized in that the blank further comprises adhesive means on the upwardly facing surface of, and extending across, the said first end portion of the said first end flap and a removable backing sheet covering said adhesive means, and in that opposed edges of the second end portion of the second end flap have cut out regions positioned so that, on folding the 15 flaps over into their article packaging positions, the adhesive means overlies the cut out regions whereby on removal of the backing sheet the first end portion can be adhered to the underlying second end portion and parts of the side flaps beneath the cut out regions.
20 The adhesive means and the backing sheet preferably form part of a double-sided adhesive tape, one side of which is adhered to said first end portion and the other side of which is covered by said backing sheet. With such a unitary blank having a single strip of adhesive tape adhered thereto, the whole pack can be sealed. This eliminates the need for hot melt 25 adhesive having to be applied along the full lengths of both folded over side flaps which is time consuming and potentially hazardous.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a blank of stiff yet foldable sheet material for assembly about an article to be 30 packaged, the blank comprising a rectangular bottom panel having spaced apart and parallel first and second sides and spaced apart and parallel third and fourth sides, first and second end flaps foldably joined to the bottom panel along said third and fourth sides, respectively, the end flaps being dimensioned so that a first end portion of the first end flap overlies a 35 second end portion of the second end flap when an article to be packaged is placed on an upwardly facing surface of the bottom panel and the second end flap and then the first end flap are folded over on top of the article, charactersed in that said first end portion is of reduced thickness on its upwardly facing surface and said second end portion is of reduced 40 thickness on its downwardly facing surface, whereby on folding the end flaps over so that the first end portion overlaps the second end portion in a rebated joint.
Preferably the overlapping portions of the rebated joint are bonded together, preferably using adhesive tape, e.g. double-sided adhesive tape.
5 Preferably each reduced thickness end portion is formed by crushing or pressing the end portion.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with particular reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure I is a schematic perspective view of a packaging blank according to the present invention; Figures 2 to 5 show various stages in the packaging of a flat article 15 with the packaging blank shown in Figure 1; and Figure 6 is a schematic detail on an enlarged scale of folded over end flaps and a side flap of the blank shown in Figure I. 20 Figure 1 shows a blank 1 of stiff yet foldable sheet material, for example double faced corrugated board, for packaging an article (not shown), for example a panel or panels of an article of furniture, such as a wardrobe or kitchen unit. Such a package is conventionally known as a "flatpack" The double-headed arrow in Figure 1 shows the preferred direction of the flutes 25 of the corrugated board.
The blank 1 comprises a rectangular bottom panel 2 having opposed spaced apart and parallel sides 3 and 4 and opposed spaced apart and parallel sides 5 and 6. Side flaps 7 and 8 are foldably joined to the bottom 30 panel 2 along sides 3 and 4, respectively, and end flaps 9 and 10 are foldably joined to the bottom panel 2 along sides 5 and 6, respectively.
The foldable connections are each conveniently provided by two spaced apart and parallel fold or crease lines spaced apart by the depth or height of the article to be packed.
The distal end portions 9a and lea of the end flaps 9 and 10 each have a reduced thickness as more clearly seen in Figure 6. The thicknesses of the end portions are typically reduced by crushing or pressing the upwardly facing surface of end portion 9a and the downwardly facing surface of the 40 end portion lOa. The reduced thickness end portions extend fully across the width of the end flaps and have a width of approximately 30 mm. The
distal end portion lOa has cut out corner regions 11 and 12. Double-sded adhesive tape 13 Is adhered to the end portion 9a and extends fully across its width, ye. from side to side. The upwardly facing surface of the tape 13 5 has a backing strip 14 removably attached thereto.
In use a flat article to be packed is placed on the bottom panel 2 and the side flaps 7 and 8 are folded over into the positions shown in Figure 2. The end flap 10 is then folded over on top of the folded over side flaps 7 and 8 10 with the cut-out regions exposing the underlying parts of the flaps 7 and 8, respectively, and the backing strip l 4 Is removed from the adhesive tape 13 (see Figure 3). The end flap 9 is then folded over on top of the side flaps 7 and 8 so that the end portion 9a overlaps the end portion lOa in a rebated joint (see Figures 4 to 6). The exposed adhesive surface of the tape 13 15 revealed after removal of the backing strip 14, adheres the end portion 9a to the underlying end portion lea (see Figure 6) and to the side flaps in the region immediately beneath the cut out regions 11 and 12.
The rebate joint of the end portions 9a and lea provides a stepless joint 20 giving stability to the pack. The provision of the single strip of double-
sided adhesive tape enables the whole pack to be sealed is a simple and speedy manner and without the need to provide hot melt adhesive, staples or the like for joining the end flaps to the side flaps.
