Abstract
A multi-embossing device for embossing a paper web (P) comprises at least one stationary embossing roll (1) and at least two movable embossing rolls (2; 3) associated therewith, such movable embossing rolls (2; 3) are movable along a straight line 4 to bring either one of them in embossing relationship with the stationary embossing roll (1) in order to form an embossing nip between the embossing roll (1) and one of the movable embossing rolls. By such a device, it is possible to provide different embossing patterns in a short change-over time. Two such arrangements may be combined such that two separate paper webs may be united (Fig.2).
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Multi-Embossing Device Technical Field The present invention relates to a multi-embossing device which is used primarily for embossing webs, especially tissue paper webs as a single or multi-ply product. This embossing can be used to provide the product with a specific appearance and/or to effect ply bonding.
Background Art Different embossing systems are known for different kinds of embossments. Normally, a special arrangement of embossing rolls is used to provide a special embossing pattern for appearance or ply bonding, usually in combination with a glueapplying device and a marrying roll. In this manner, the embossment can be applied to single plies to be combined subsequently, or to a multi-ply product wherein the plies are combined for embossing.
US-A 5 198 242 describes an embossing apparatus in an extrusion line for the production of web extrusions like vinyl siding. This known apparatus includes a revolver provided above a backing roll and supported in a pair of cradles so that selected embossing rolls can be juxtaposed with the backing roll to define the embossing gap. The revolver allows embossing roll changes on the fly. Two to five embossing rolls can be provided on the revolver.

Disclosure of the Invention It is the technical problem (object) of the present invention to develop a multi-embossing device for embossing a paper web which enables, in a simple manner with a simple device, the provision of different embossing patterns in a short changeover time.
This problem is solved by a multi-embossing device for embossing a paper web, having at least one essentially stationary central embossing roll and at least two movable embossing rolls associated therewith, said movable embossing rolls being movable along an essentially straight line to bring either one of them in embossing relationship with the stationary central embossing roll so as to form an embossing nip between the central embossing roll and one of the movable embossing rolls.
According to a further improvement of the present invention, at least two sets of a central embossing roll and at least two movable embossing rolls are provided, each for one separate paper web such that the central roll or a movable embossing roll of each set together form a nip for combining the embossed paper webs. In the arrangement with one movable roll of each set forming the combining nip, this can be realized in a very simple manner by moving the movable embossing rolls into their operational position along a straight line.
The movable embossing rolls of the two sets can either be moved separately or so that the same two rolls are always together opposite and above each other.
Preferably, the movable embossing rolls are rotatably mounted on a support rail, wherein each movable roll is rotatable within a bearing shoe movably supported by the support rail. These bearing shoes can be locked in position along the support rail.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
If a marrying roll and/or means for applying glue for ply bonding are to be provided, these may be mounted in a pivotable manner so as to be pivotable away from the area of movement of the movable rolls when moved into the operational position with the central embossing roll.
Brief Description of the Drawings Preferred exemplary embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in the attached drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows in a schematic view a preferred embodiment of a single-web-multi-embossing device according to the present invention, Fig. 2 shows a similar device according to Fig. 1, however in a modified version for two webs, Fig. 3 shows a preferred embodiment of a mounting arrangement for a movable roll.
Embodiments of the Invention Fig. 1 shows a multi-embossing device for embossing a paper web P. Reference sign 1 designates a stationary central embossing roll, which can be a rubber roll, but the material of same depends on the desired type of embossment and may, alternatively, for example, be steel.
Additionally provided are movable embossing rolls 2,3, movable in the direction of the double arrow 4. In the arrangement as illustrated, the movable roll 3 is in the operational position for effecting embossment of the paper web P between this movable roll 3 and the opposing central roll or counter roll 1. The movable rolls 2,3 are rotatably mounted, for example, journaled within bearing shoes 5. These shoes 5
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
are slidably supported on a straight support rail 6 such that the movable rolls 2,3 can be moved along the support rail 6 in the direction indicated by the double arrow 4. Thus, it is possible to bring the movable rolls 2,3 into their operational position opposite the counter roll 1, which permits the provision of different embossing patterns on the paper web P.
On account of this advantageous arrangement according to the present invention, such different embossing patterns can be provided in a short change-over time.
The movable rolls can be locked into the operational position for embossing by temporarily locking the bearing shoes 5 at the appropriate location along the support rail 6.
Fig. 2 shows two of the devices according to Fig. 1 appropriately arranged opposite each other such that they cooperate to emboss paper webs PI and P2 and provide a multiply product P3. When the movable rolls 3 are in their operational position for embossment, they can be used for finally combining the paper webs P1 and P2 to the paper web P3. If a marrying roll 7 and a glue-applying device 8 are used, these means should be fixed in such a manner that the means can be moved away from the area of movement needed for bringing the movable rolls 2 from the stand-by position into the operational position. This is not illustrated in detail, but only indicated by the arrows 9.
The movable embossing rolls together with the bearing shoes are provided with means for adjustment in a longitudinal direction and a cross-direction thereto.
For simple mounting and demounting, there is a fixed bearing for the multiple rolls on one side of same and a changebearing. Fig. 3 shows the fixed bearing 10 on the left-hand side and the change-bearing 11 on the right-hand side. The
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
movable roll 2 or 3, for example a sleeve-roll as shown in Fig. 3, is rotatably journaled within the bearings 12,13.
These bearings 12,13 are located within the bearing shoes 5.
The bearing shoes are slidably located within the support rail 6.
The movable roll 2 or 3 may comprise a roll body 14 and an embossing sleeve 15.
The bearing 13 and the bearing shoe 5 on the right-hand side of Fig. 3 are provided within the changing mount 16. This changing mount can be removed in the direction of the arrow 17. By removing the changing mount 16, an opening 18 comes free through which the movable roll 2 or 3 can be dismantled and changed, if necessary.
