Abstract

A device for joining a tubular member (202) to a structure (201) comprises a boss having first and second sections (101, 102), the boss being a loose fit in the tubular member (202). The sections (101, 102) have complementary inclined surfaces. A captive nut (108 - see figure 1) and bolt (109) are arranged to fix the boss to the structure (201) such that when the first and second sections (101, 102) are urged together they move transverse to each other to lock against the tubular member (202).

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
JOINING DEVICE FOR TUBULAR MEMBERS The present invention relates to devices for joining tubular members to make structures.
Joining devices for enabling structures to be constructed from tubular members are many and various. Most types of tube joining devices include projections which are inserted into tubular members to be joined and rcly on friction or clastic distortion of the projections to lock the components of the structure together. Such joining devices are not entirely satisfactory. Firstly, the projections have to be a good fit within the tubular members, and secondly, plastic deformation of the tubes and/or projections on the joining devices can cause the joints to loosen and so weaken the structure.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved joining device for tubular members, which provides a positive locking action and can accommodate a degree of variation in the internal dimensions of tubular members to be joined by the device.
This device enables the structure to be easily dismantled and reassembled many times whilst maintaining the tightness of the joint.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device for joining a tubular member to a structure, including a boss adapted to be a loose fit in a tubular member to be attached to the structure and having two sections with complementary surfaces at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the stub, and means for urging the two sections of the boss together, the arrangement being such as to permit transverse movement between the sections of the boss as they are urged together thereby to provide a locking action between the boss and the tubular member, and means for attaching the boss to the structure.
A suitable means for urging the two sections of the boss together comprises a bolt passing longitudinally through the boss, at least one portion of which is relieved to permit sideways displacement of at least one section of the boss as the bolt is tightened, the said
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
sideways movement being provided by the inchned surface of one section of the boss moving s ng pi-ovi relative to the other. The bolt may also serve as the means for attaching the boss to the structure.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure I is a longitudinal section of a tube joining device embodying the invention, and Figure 2 shows a part section of the tube joining device of Fig I in position in a structure, and Figure 3 shows a second embodiment of the invention showing how a corner section of a structure can be fabricated using the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a tube joining device embodying the invention consists of a boss 100 having first and second sections, 101 and 102 respectively. The sections 101,102 of the boss 100 have complementary surfaces 103, 104 at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the boss 100 and axial bores 105 106 respectively The bore 105 in the section 101 of the boss 100 has a counter bore 107 at its outer end and the bore 106 of the section 102 of the boss 100 is shaped at its outer end to receive a captive nut 108. Associated with the captive nut 108 is a bolt 109 which passes axially through the bores 105, 106 in the sections 101, 102 of the boss 100. The diameter of the bolt 109 is less than that of the bores 105, 106 in the sections 10 0),) 02 of the boss 100 so that as it is tightened and the surfaces 103,104 of the sections 101, 102 of the boss 100 are brought into contact, a sideways displacement of the section 101 of the boss 100 relative to the section 102 of the boss 100 occurs.
Figure 2 shows the tube joining device of Figure I in use. A tubular member 20 I forms part of a structure to which a second tubular member 202 is to be joined. A boss 100 having the same cross-section as the tubular member 202 and transvcrse dimensions such that it is a loose fit in the tubular member 202 is chosen. Appropriately positioned holes 203,204 are drilled in the tubular membcr 20 I, the outer hole being recessed to form a countersink for the head of the bolt 109 of the tube joining device. The bolt 109 is passed
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
through the holes 203, 204 in the tubular member 201 into the boss 100 of the tube joining device and secured loosely with the captive nut 108. The boss 100 is then inserted into the tubular member 202 and the bolt 109 is tightened. As described above, this causes a sideways displacement of one section of the boss 100 relative to the other, locking the tubular member 202 to the tubular member 20 I.
Figure 3 shows a corner construction unit 300 embodying the invention.
Referring to Figure 3, the corner unit 300 has three mutually orthogonal planar walls 301, 302,303 in each of which there is a hole 304 adapted to receive the bolt 109 of a tube joining device 100 embodying the invention. A fashion piece 305 is adapted to fit into the space 306 enclosed by walls 301, 302,303, of the corner unit 300 and hide the heads of the bolts 109 of the tube joining devices 100.
The tube joining device can be made of any suitable material such as zinc based alloy or a rigid plastics material such as that known as ABS and can have any desired crosssection.
