The machine might be used as an internal combustion engine, an air compressor or hydraulic machine. Multi-cylinder arrangements might comprise a plurality of such single cylinder machines.
Description
Balancing of Rocking Piston Reciprocating Machines
The present invention relates to single cylinder reciprocating machines of the crank slider type and in particular to the construction and balance of the reciprocating parts.
Traditionally the balance of such machines is achieved approximately by providing a counterweight to neutralize the rotating mass of the conrod assembly and half of the effective mass of the piston. Other more complicated arrangements are sometimes used such as providing a dummy piston and conrod assembly moving anti-phase, or by utilizing balancer shafts. Such a machine might be used as an internal combustion engine or as a pump.
According to one aspect of the current invention a single cylinder reciprocating machine comprises a closed plane cylinder, valve or port means being provided for the admission and removal of the working media, a piston assembly, characterized in that said piston has a head portion which is slidingly sealed in the cylinder and a connecting rod portion which extends axially from the head portion, the end of the connecting rod portion remote from the head portion being rotationally connected to a crankpin on a crankshaft, so that the centre of gravity of the piston assembly substantially coincides with the axis of the pivotal connection to the crankpin.
When the crankshaft is rotated at constant speed, the resultant radial out of balance force is of constant magnitude and can be completely balanced by the attachment of counterweights to the crankshaft.
The centre of gravity condition can be achieved by providing an extension to the piston assembly diametrically opposite to the piston head portion to provide the necessary weight.
A number of piston machines might be advantageously joined to cooperate to form a multi-cylinder machine so that the whole machine might be completely balanced. In
particular a two cylinder four stroke internal combustion engine could be made in which the two pistons are attached to the same crank and move in phase and parallel to each other. Such an arrangement would provide even ignition intervals and could be wholly balanced in accordance this invention.
Various embodiments of the invention are now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 illustrates a single cylinder two stroke engine in accordance with the present invention, in which inlet port 11 and exhaust port 12 control the gas flow in the engine;
Figure 2 illustrates a three dimensional view of the piston assembly attached to crankshaft of figure 1;
As illustrated in Figure 1, a single cylinder reciprocating machine comprises a closed cylinder 10. A piston 16 is slidingly located in the cylinder 10, and the piston 16 is sealed with respect to the walls of the cylinder 10 by means of a piston ring 15. The piston has attached a plate 25 to control the opening of the exhaust port. The piston head 14 has a a surface 21 that cooperates with the cylinder 10, the surface 10 having a spherical shape with a radius nominally equal to the radius of the cylinder 10. The piston 16 is pivotally connected by crankpin 18 to crankshaft 17 which is rotatively mounted with respect to a crankcase 19. The piston 16 includes a weight 9 attached in a direction diametrically opposite the piston head 14 to position the centre of gravity of piston 16. The piston head 14 is thereby constrained by the crankshaft 17 crankpin 18 and cylinder 10 to move in reciprocating motion within the cylinder 10. The combined centre of gravity of the piston 16 and the piston ring 15 and port control plate 25 coincides with the centre of crankpin 18
In operation at constant speed of crankshaft 19, the rotating and reciprocating components of the piston 16 and the piston ring 15 and the plate 25 and weight 9 produce a force that is a rotating vector of constant magnitude rotating at the speed of crankshaft 19 which when balanced by suitable counterweights (not shown) attached to crankshaft 19 results in the elimination of all shaking forces and moments except the moment associated with the inertia and motion of the piston 16 which is in a plane perpendicular to the crankshaft and is additive to the torque pulses produced by the operation of the machine against pressure within the cylinder.
