Description

A Holder for a Mobile Communications Device
This invention relates to a holder for a mobile communications device, and particularly to a holder for a mobile communications device which is capable of accessing the Internet.
Mobile communications devices are becoming increasingly popular, mobile telephones
and personal digital assistants (PDAs) being common examples. With the recent introduction of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), such devices may connect to the Internet, thus providing a useful source of information which can be accessed via a portable, wireless link. Access to the Internet via such mobile devices is also advantageous in that connection is generally quicker, it not being necessary to boot-up a computer. Nor is it necessary to tie-up the user's telephone line.
Such mobile communications devices are characterised in that they comprise a display screen, usually a liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen, which is of a relatively small size.
As a result, the viewing of certain information on the screen can be inconvenient. For example, a conventional Internet web-page will usually be of a resolution appropriate for computer monitors or some other large display. As a result, the majority of Internet-enabled mobile communications devices are only able to display specially adapted Internet pages. The screens of most mobile communications devices are further limited in terms of their displayable colour resolution.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a holder for a mobile communications device, the holder comprising: a data port for connection to a mobile communications device; a convertor ; and a video port for connection to an external display, wherein the convertor is arranged to receive, via the data port, displayable data from the mobile communications device, and to output, to the video port, the displayable data for display on the external display device.
The holder provides an interface means wherein a mobile communications device can be connected to the data port of the holder, displayable data being output from the holder to an external display device. Thus, a user will be able to conveniently view any information received via the communications device, on a suitable external display, for example, a television or computer monitor. Since the external display can be of any chosen size and colour resolution, use of such a holder permits more convenient viewing, interaction and editing of any displayable data received by the mobile communications device.
Preferably, the holder further comprises a control port for receiving control data from an external control source, the convertor being arranged to receive the control data from the control port, and to output the control data to the data port for controlling the operation of a connected communications device. This feature provides a further interface by means of which a user may control the mobile communications device in a more convenient manner. An example of such an external device is a computer keyboard. The external device may incorporate a tracking device to control a pointer on the display. The tracking device may be, for example, a tracker-ball, pressure-sensitive nipple, or a touch pad. Thus, when the communications device is connected in the holder, interaction with the communications device is easily facilitated, the user not being required to operate the small keypad usually found on conventional communications devices. By comparison with such a conventional small-size keypad, operation of a computer keyboard and/or tracking device is much faster. Such a computer keyboard and/or tracking device is also ergonomic and so easier to operate.
The control port may be in the form of an infra-red port for receiving infra-red control signals from an external control device, e. g. a remote keyboard.
A user is thus able to access the Internet, using a mobile communications device with a user-interface which is much closer to that of a personal computer, and consequently, the usability and usefulness of the Internet connection is enhanced.
Whilst the holder enables more convenient viewing and interaction with Internet web-pages, it will be appreciated that the editing of data stored internally within the mobile communication device can also be viewed and edited. For example, internal telephone directories can be updated. E-mails can also be sent using the holder.
Given the fact that, in use, the communications device will be connected to the holder, the holder may further comprise a charge circuit connected to a charging port, the charging port being interface-able with a charging terminal of a connected communications device. The holder may further comprise a sensor for detecting a connection between the data port and a connected mobile communications device, the sensor being arranged to enable the convertor only in the event of such a detected connection.
As mentioned previously, the holder finds useful application with mobile telephones, and in particular, Internet-enabled mobile telephones.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a communications system comprising: a mobile communications device ; a holder; and an external display, wherein the holder comprises: a data port for connection to the mobile communications device; a convertor ; and a video port for connection to the external display, wherein the convertor is arranged to receive, via the data port, displayable data from the mobile communications device, and to output, to the video port, the displayable data for display on the external display device.
The converter may comprise a microprocessor.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of operating a mobile communications device, the method comprising: connecting the mobile communications device to a holder; connecting the holder to an external display; and inputting control data to the mobile communications device, the holder comprising a data port for connection to the mobile communications device, a convertor, and a video port for connection to the external display, the converter being
arranged to receive, via the data port, displayable data from the mobile communications device for display on the external display device. The invention will be explained, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a block diagram representation of a holder for a mobile telephone device, in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a communications display system utilising the holder shown in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, a holder 1 suitable for interfacing a mobile telephone (represented as block 27) to an external display means comprises three external interfaces, namely a telephone connector socket 3, a video output 5, and a control input 7. The connector socket 3 itself comprises a telephone connector 9 and a charging connector 11. The telephone and charging connectors 9,11 are situated in the base of the connector socket 3 in such a way that, when the mobile telephone 27 is inserted within the connector socket 3, an interface and charging socket of the mobile telephone 27 will be engaged therewith.
Within the body of the holder I is provided an interface control circuit 12. The interface control circuit 12 provides a system whereby video data received by the mobile telephone 27 (i. e. when it is in the holder) can be displayed to an external source (not shown in Figure 1) by means of the video output 5. The video output 5 comprises a baseband video output 5a, and a non-baseband video output 5b. The interface control circuit 12 also provides for user control of the inserted mobile telephone 27 by means of the control input 7. The interface control circuit 12 comprises a microprocessor 13, a telephone interface 15, an infra-red keyboard interface 17, a video output controller 19 and a charging circuit 26. The video output controller 19 itself comprises a high-resolution graphics generator 21, a baseband video driver 23, and a UHFNHF
modulator 25. Operation of each part of the interface control circuit 12 will be explained in detail below.
In use, the mobile telephone 27 will be held in the connector socket 3 and connected to both the telephone and charging connectors 9,11. Video data which is output from the mobile telephone 27 is transferred, by means of the telephone interface 15, to the processor 13, which outputs the video data to the hi-resolution graphics generator 21 of the video output controller 19. The graphics generator 21 converts the video data into high-resolution colour video signals (which could relate to graphics or text) at the required line and field rate for the intended external display device. These signals are then input to the baseband video driver 23 which modulates the colour video signals to provide a displayable video signal for displays having a baseband video input, e. g. a SCART input. This displayable video signal is output to the baseband video output 5a, e. g. a SCART output connection. The displayable video signal output from the baseband video driver 23 is also fed-through to the UHFNHF modulator 25 which provides a further displayable video signal, in this case non-baseband. At the video output 5, the two video signals, i. e. baseband and non-baseband, are provided for connection to an external display by means of the video outputs 5a and 5b, respectively.
It will be appreciated that a user may wish to control or input data to the mobile telephone 27 when it is connected in the holder 1. For example, if the user is accessing the Internet, or editing the contents of the mobile telephone's internal memory, interaction, by means of textual input, will be necessary. The control input 7 provides a means whereby control signals from an external device can be transferred to the mobile telephone 27. The control input 7, in this example, is actually an infra-red control input for receiving input signals from an infra-red keyboard (not shown) by means of an infra-red link. The received infra-red input signals are demodulated by the infra-red interface 17, and transferred to the processor 13. The input signals are then input to the mobile telephone 27 by means of the telephone interface 15 and the telephone connector 9.
As mentioned previously, the interface control circuit 12 comprises a charging circuit 26. This charging circuit 26 is connected, via a power input socket 28, to a power source (not shown). The charging circuit 26 is connected to the charging connector 11.
The charging circuit 26 acts in the conventional manner to charge the mobile telephone 27 when it is situated within the connector socket 3. Thus, whilst a user is operating and viewing video output from the mobile telephone 27, the battery of the mobile telephone will be charged.
Although the power input socket 28 is shown connected to the charging circuit 26 only, it will be appreciated that the interface control circuit 12 will include some transforming system for providing a suitable power supply to all the electronic components therein.
As a further feature, a power control (not shown) is provided as part of the interface control circuit 12. This power control activates the interface control circuit 12, but only once the mobile telephone 27 is correctly situated within the connector socket 3.
Accordingly, the holder 1 will only act as a suitable video data interface once the mobile telephone 27 is correctly located within the holder. A visual output is also provided to give the user and indication that the interface control circuit 12 is operating.
Referring to Figure 2, the mobile telephone 27 is shown inserted to the connector socket 3 of the holder 1. The video output 5 is connected to an external television display 33 by means of a connecting lead 34. As mentioned briefly above, the video output 5 actually consists of two video signal outputs 5a, 5b, one being baseband and one being non-baseband (UHF/VHF). It is also possible to provide a computer monitor output as an additional video output, the interface control circuit 12 further including an appropriate modulator and 15-way high intensity D VGA socket. Data input to the mobile telephone 27 is performed using a keyboard 29 having an inra-red transmitter which communicates with the telephone via the input path of the interface control circuit 12 described above. The keyboard may incorporate a tracking device to control a pointer on the screen 33. The tracking device may be, for example, a tracker-ball, a pressure-sensitive nipple or a touch pad. The tracking device may have associated switches for making selection commands. The control input 7 is in the form of an infra-red sensor. A L. E. D. 31 is provided on the front of the holder 1 for giving a visual indication of when the mobile telephone 27 is located correctly within the telephone connector socket 3.
