Abstract

The present invention provides a method of stabilising an inverselyotropic liquid crystalline phase, said method comprising the steps of: (a) contacting an amphiphile, a polar medium and at least one polymerisable lyophobic material, wherein the amphiphile and polar medium form a lyotropic liquid crystalline phase; and (b) polymerising said at least one polymerisable lyophobic material to form a polymer in the lyophobic region of said lyotropic liquid crystalline phase. A second aspect of the invention relates to a composition comprising: (a) an inverse lyotropic liquid crystalline phase comprising an amphiphile and a polar medium; and (b) polymer comprising a polymerised lyophobic material, in addition to the amphiphile, and disposed in the lyophobic region of said inverse lyotropic liquid crystalline phase. A further aspect of the invention provides a process for the preparation of a stabilised inverse lyotropic liquid crystalline phase.
