Coating-machines.-In the coating of materials or articles, the coating liquid is applied in the form of a cloud as described in Specification 229,351, while simultaneously heating the material for the purpose of drying it, the material being traversed with respect to the cloud. The liquid is applied as a cloud of finely-divided particles, from which the larger particles have been separated. The apparatus employed is similar to that described in Specification 236,194. The construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 differs in that the arcuate bed of the dyeing-chamber A is formed by the upper surface of a steam-chest 15 having transverse baffle plates 33; the chamber A is provided with a double roof comprising members 38, 39 and a steam-coil 40 is arranged between; and the drying-chamber B is fitted with a heating-coil 11 arranged close to the upper surface of the material; the dyeing-chamber A may be divided by one or more longitudinal partitions 150 arranged to terminate at a point close to or more remote from the surface of the material, and to obviate the formation of drops the lower edge of the partition may take the form of a steam-pipe 151; for the purpose of producing shaded band effects, longitudinal steam-pipes 153 mav connect the pipes 18, 18a at the inlet and outlet of the chamber. This apparatus may be employed without the use of heating during dyeing, and the conveyer band 16 and the web 23 mav be dispensed with. By heating the material while it is in contact with dye cloud, a deeper shade may be obtained, and by heating the chamber, a denser and wetter cloud may be employed; in order to augment the heating of the chamber, the walls may be made hollow and provided with steam coils in addition to the roof, and in such cases the heated bed may be omitted. The airbrushes 57 may be operated by air, carbonic acid, &c., or by superheated steam; the latter assists in the fixing of the dye at the moment of its application. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the dyeing-chamber is only slightly wider than the material operated on, the side troughs below the spraying-devices are omitted, a steam-pipe 202 is arranged at the lower edge of each longitudinal wall 200, and the chamber has an extension 205 which overlies the drying-chamber B. The spraying-devices 209 are arranged as a battery in end wall of this extension, a trough 216 being provided for the purpose. of collecting the larger particles, and a heating-coil 207 prevents the formation of drops on the roof. In this construction, the fabric is separated from its conveying-band 16 at the point at which it leaves the chamber, that is, in front of the trough 216; from this point the fabric passes through a drying-chamber of which both upper and lower surfaces 212, 213 respectively, are heated. The conveyer band is passed under the lower part of the drying-chamber. A fan 222 arranged in the roof serves to supply a gentle current of air for directing the cloud on to the material.
