Abstract
A metallic coated plastic component 11 has a metal free region 14, such as an end face 14 of a depending annular wall 13 thereof. Further disclosed is a method of joining the component 11 to a support member 10 which comprises the heating of both in the region of a connection point or points, corresponding for the component 11 to the metal free region thereof 14 and to an area of the support member 10, possibly an annular groove 12 therein, accommodating the wall 13 of component 11. The supporting member 10 may have a welding ring 17 with which a centring edge of the component 11 may cooperate for joining. Both component 11 and support 10 may be formed of thermoplastic material. The heating, which may be effected by ultrasound friction with the support 10 mounted to an anvil 18 and the component 11 agitated by a vibrating punch 19, may permit sealing between component 11 and support 10. The method may result in the formation of an assembly of the component 11 and support 10. The metallic coating may be chromium. The face 14 may have been prevented from taking up the metallic coating with a prior application of metal resistant / repelling laquer. The support member 11 may be the cover hood of an internal combustion engine air filter; a vehicle manufacturers logo or emblem may carried by the component 11 joined to the hood.
Description
2364270 METHOD OF CONNECTING A PLASTICS MATERIAL COMPONENT PART TO A
SUPPORTING MEMBER The invention relates to a method of connecting a plastics material component part to a supporting member, the plastics material component part having a metallic coating.
Such a method is used, for example, to secure lettering, typed names or symbols on a supporting member. Usually, the plastics material component part is glued, or it has pin-like extensions which are inserted through openings in the supporting member and are subsequently deformed in a plastic manner by the effect of heat.
When gluing the two parts together, there is a dsk that the connection will come apart in the event of high mechanical or thermal stress. Moreover, the gluing process incurs higher manufacturing costs because of the use of an additional material. No reliable sealing between plastics material component part and supporting member can be achieved when thermally deformable pins are used for connecfion purposes.
In consequence, the basic object of the invention is to provide a method of connecting a plastics material component part to a supporting member, which withstands both high mechanical and high thermal stresses and provides reliable sealing between plastics material component part and supporting member.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of connecting a plastics material component part to a supporting member, the plastics material component part having a metallic coating, wherein the connection is effected by heating the plastics material component part and the supporting member in the region of the connection point, and the plastics material component part has a metal-free zone in the region of the connection point.
An advantage of the invention resides in the fact that a form-fitting connection can be effected - if the supporting member is not a thermoplastic plastics material - via the metal-free zone of the plastics material component part. If the supporting member is also formed from plastics material, the two parts are fused together by heating the plastics material component part.
Preferably, both the supporting member and the plastics material component part are formed from a thermoplastic material. This material is predominantly suitable for thermal connection.
According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the connection may be effected by means of ultrasound or frictional welding. Other welding methods are, of course, also conceivable, such as, for example, the welding process using induction heat or the hot element welding process. By appropriately shaping the metal-free zone of the plastics material component part, a pressure-resistant sealing is possible between supporting member and plastics matedal component part.
In another advantageous embodiment, the supporting member may have a welding ring or welding edge. The tip of this welding edge is in contact with the metal-free zone of the plastics material component part, and said edge ensures the required sealing during the welding of the two parts.
In a further development of the invention, a centering edge may be provided, facilitating the joining of the two parts during assembly of the two parts.
The present invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through a plastics material component part and a supporting member; and Figure 2 is a detailed view of the method of connecting the parts shown in Figure 1.
A supporting member 10 is illustrated in Figure 1 and is, for example, a cover hood or a front component part, on which an emblem is to be mounted.
The illustrated example involves the cover hood of an air filter for the intake air of an internal combustion engine. The logo or emblem of the vehicle manufacturer or the manufacturer of the intake system is to be mounted on this cover hood. The emblem is a plastics material component part 11, which has to be connected to the supporting member 10 in a sealing and reliable manner. The plastics material component part 11 is provided with a metallic coating, more especially a coating of chromium. The supporting member 10 has a groove 12 in the region where the plastics material component part 11 is accommodated. The plastics material component part 11 is provided with an annular bead 13 for insertion in the groove. The face 14 of the annular bead 13 pointing towards the groove 12 was provided with a lacquer prior to the application of the metallic coating, and such lacquer prevents the spread of metal. The supporting member 10 may be connected to a basic body member or housing, which is not illustrated here, via the securing structures 15 and 16.
Figure 2 is a detailed view of the method for connecting the parts illustrated in Figure 1. Identical parts are provided with identical reference numerals.
The supporting member 10 has a welding ring 17 in the groove 12. This welding ring has a triangular configuration and permits the plastics material component part 11 to be reliably connected to the supporting member 10 by means of frictional welding. For the welding process, the supporting member 10 is placed upon an anvil 18. The plastics material component part 11 is moved towards the supporting member 10 by a welding punch 19 with the effect of vibration and welded to said member in the region of the welding ring 17. Because of the annular configuration of the welding ring 17, the opening in the supporting member 10 is reliably sealed. An intermediate layer 20, which compensates for tolerances, may also be inserted between the two parts.
