Abstract

A doorbell unit 10, comprising a microphone 16 and speaker 17, is disposed at a remote location 12. The doorbell unit is connected to the Internet 25 via a telecommunication link means 20. When the doorbell 13 is activated, the doorbell unit is connected to a web page on the Internet which is unique to house 12. The web page generates a predefined response to the caller 5 which may request that the user leaves a message, which is subsequently stored on a storage means associated with the web page. User 40 can access the web page via PC 27 and playback recorded messages. Alternatively, a real time link may be established between the caller 5 and user 40 via the telecommunication link means 20 and PC 27, during which the user may choose to send a pre-recorded message instructing the caller to leave a message. In an alternative embodiment, the telecommunication link means establishes contact with the user 41 via a wireless communications network. The system may be arranged to automatically transfer a caller to the web page if the mobile phone 33 is engaged.

Description

2354394 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR COMMUNICATING VIA THE INTERNET
The present invention relates to the field of communications. More specifically, the present invention relates to the field of communications via the internet.
It is known to access remote sites via the internet. For example, an individual can view the traffic downtown live via the internet from a PC in his office or home. Various events, such as speeches and astronomical phenomenon, have also been available for real time viewing over the internet.
It is also known to have both audio and video links between a doorbell located on a house or an office building and a central reception area. This enables a person to answer the doorbell without having to physically go to the door. However, the person must be at the central reception area in order to answer the doorbell.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a system which offers live audio and video links to a remote location without requiring the user to be at a specific receiving location.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide the person answering the doorbell with a range of options as to how he responds to the doorbell.
According to the present invention there is provided a system for communicating with a remote location via the internet, said system including a doorbell unit disposed at said remote location, said doorbell unit having a doorbell and a transceiver unit capable of transmitting and receiving signals, said transceiver unit being coupled to a telecommunications link means, said 2 telecommunication link means being arranged to facilitate communication between the internet and said doorbell unit, such that a user of the internet can receive signals from said doorbell unit and transmit signals to said doorbell unit.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, said telecommunications link means is further coupled to a wireless communication network.
The signal may be an audio signal, a video signal, or both.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for communicating with a remote location via the internet, the method comprising the steps of:
causing a signal to be transmitted from a remote location, receiving said signal, storing said signal in a storage means connected to the internet, accessing said stored signal, and causing a response to said signal to be transmitted via the internet to said remote location.
While the principle advantages and features of the invention have been described above, a greater understanding and appreciation of the invention may be obtained by referring to the drawings and detailed description of the preferred embodiments, presented by way of example only, in which;
Figure I shows a diagram of the communication system according to an aspect of the present invention.
In figure I a doorbell unit 10 is disposed at a remote location 12. The remote location may be a house or an office. The doorbell unit comprises a doorbell 13 and a transceiver unit 14. In this preferred embodiment the transceiver unit is an audio transceiver comprising a microphone 16 and a 3 speaker 17. The transceiver unit 14 may also comprise a video transmitter 15. In this preferred embodiment the video transmitter is a CCD camera.
The doorbell unit is coupled to a telecommunication link means 20. The telecommunications link means is also coupled to the internet 25. As is well known in the art, the internet has means for storing data and this data can be associated with a specific web page. The telecommunication link means may also be coupled to a wireless communications network via a mobile telephone base station 30.
The finictioning of communications system according to the present invention will now be given by way of following examples.
A caller 5 presses the doorbell 13 or doorbell unit 10 disposed on house 12. The doorbell unit sends a signal to the telecommunications link means 20 which responds by establishing a link with the internet. The internet accesses a web page which is unique to house 12. The web page initiates a predefined response to be transmitted to the caller 5 via the telecommunication link means. This response is broadcast via speaker 16 located in the audio transceiver unit 14 disposed on the doorbell unit 10. The predefined response may prompt the caller to leave a message via microphone 17. The message may be stored on the storage means associated with that web page. At a later time a user 40 accesses the web page via his PC 27 and listens to the recorded message left by the caller. As will be appreciated, the user 40 may access the web page from any PC which has access to the internet.
In addition to an audio message, a video of the caller may be recorded via the CCD camera 15 and stored on the storage means associated with that web page for later viewing by the user 40.
4 In an alternative embodiment of the previously described example, a real time link is established between the caller 5 and the user 40 via the telecommunication link means 20, the internet 25 and the PC 27. This enables the user to respond to the caller 5 from his PC. As will be appreciated, the user 40 may be located anywhere in which he has access to a PC which is linked to the internet.
Alternatively, the user 40 may, upon hearing or seeing the caller, choose to send a pre-recorded message to the caller instructing the caller to leave a message. This enables the user to choose which caller he speaks to live and which caller he wants to leave a message and deal with at a later time.
In a fin-ther embodiment of the present invention, the telecommunications link means 20 establishes contact with a user 41 via a wireless communications network. In this embodiment a caller 5 presses the doorbell 13 which sends a signal to the telecommunications link means 20. The telecommunications link means establishes a link with a wireless communications network base station 30 in a manner which is well known in the art of mobile phone communication. The base station transmits a signal to a mobile phone 33 which alerts user 41 that a caller is at his house 12. The user may then answer the caller or send a prerecorded message to the caller instructing the caller to leave a message or perform some other activity.
In an alternative embodiment of the previous example of the present invention, if the mobile phone 33 is engaged, the telecommunications link means automatically accesses the internet and the web page associated with that specific house 12. The system then f1mctions as described in the previous paragraphs. For example, the caller may be prompted to leave a message.
As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, various modifications may be made to the embodiment hereinbefore described without departing from the scope of the present invention.
For example, the system may be linked to a security system or a fire alarm, which are also linked to the web page. The user may alter the security systems or fire alarm setting via the web page.

Claims (6)

1. A system for communicating with a remote location via the internet, said system including a doorbell unit disposed at said remote location, said doorbell unit having a doorbell and a transceiver unit capable of transmitting and receiving signals, said transceiver unit being coupled to a telecommunication link means, said telecommunication link means being arranged to facilitate communication between the internet and said doorbell unit, such that a user of the internet can receive signals from said doorbell unit and transmit signals to said doorbell unit.
2. A system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said transceiver unit includes a microphone and a speaker, and said signal includes an audio signal.
3. A system as claimed in Claims I or 2, wherein said transceiver unit includes a CCD camera, and said signal includes a video signal.
4. A system as claimed in any preceding claims, wherein said telecommunication link means is fin-ther coupled to a wireless conununication network.
5. A method for communicating with a remote location via the internet, the method comprising the steps of. causing a signal to be transmitted from a remote location, receiving said signal, storing said signal in a storage means connected to the internet, accessing said stored signal, and causing a response to said signal to be transmitted via the internet to said remote location.
