Abstract

Aluminium oxide is produced by the oxidation of aluminium bromide vapour with air or oxygen. The aluminium bromide is produced by heating aluminous materials with carbon in a current of bromine vapour. Alternatively, the aluminous materials may be heated in a mixture of carbon monoxide and bromine vapour to produce aluminium bromide.

Description

k 2353520 PREPARATION OF ALUMINIUM OXIDE FROM ALUMINOUS MATERIALS VIA THE
BROMIDE -- --------------------- --------------------- This invention relates to the preparation of aluminium oxide from aluminous materials via aluminium bromide.
Aluminium oxide is usually prepared from bauxite by the Bayer process. The Bayer process is energy- intensive and produces large amounts of noxious waste. Suitable bauxite deposits are limited in quantity and are usually located in the tropics, whereas other aluminous materials are widespread. Heating to around 606'c converts clay into a mixture of amorphous alumina and silica.
According to the present invention, aluminous materials such as pulverised fuel ash (27% Al.0 or calcined china clay is mixed with carbon and heated in a stream of bromine vapour to produce aluminium bromide vapour.
iq 2 9 3 -- c -f- 3 9 -, 2 A -t- c- c) The aluminous material may,insteadlbe heated in a mixture of carbon monoxide and bromine vapour in order to produce aluminium bromide vapour.
+ xD + 0 The hot aluminium bromide vapour is freed from dust and then oxidised with air or oxygen at 100ec. Aluminium oxide and bromine are formed. The aluminium oxide product is collected and the bromine is condensed and returned to the start of the process. Aluminium oxide 0 prepared at 1000e is in the crystalline form of alpha-alumina which is not soluble in aqueous acids and alkalis. This means that it can be purified bywashing with aqueous acids or alkalis. The only impurity likely is ironbut this is not likely to be present in quantity as iron bromide is not very volatile and is only oxidised slowly.
