Abstract
A rope for spinning 1 being adapted so that one end of the rope receives the other end so as to form a loop. The other end having a handle 2 which is fixed with respect to that end and adapted to allow the handle 2 and the rope 1 to rotate freely relative to each other. The handle 2 has rolling bearing means 5 between the handle 2 and the rope 1 to allow rotation.
Description
2351676 APPLICATION FOR A PATENT AN IMPROVED ROPE FOR SPINNING Rope
spinning is a recreational activity that was certainly practised 60 years ago, but apparently has not been Widely practised recently. It requires a length of rope of 5-6 metres with a metal thimble' at one end; the other end is threaded through the thimble and held in the hand. The loop is spun around the body (the 'crinoline') or outside the body; it is possible to change from one to the other by jumping Into or out of the loop in continuous motion.
The main problem is that the rope tends to become twisted; this can be partially alleviated by turning the rope in the hand, but it cannot be fully corrected. The invention is to solve this problem by allowing the rope's end to tum freely in the hand as with a skipping rope, thus enabling the rope not only to avoid becoming twisted but also to correct by itself any twisting which may have started.
There are two essential features of the invention: the one is the attachment of a ball containing a bearing race to the loose end of a spinning rope to prevent it from becoming twisted; the other is the addition of a flange to the ball to prevent friction between the rope and the finger of the operating hand. The rope can have a bush on the end onto which a nut can be screwed to allow the rope to turn freely. There may be other ways of locking the rope-end inside the housing.
The drawings show A A section through the ball along the direction of the rope B A plan view of the ball viewed from the open end c A plan view of the ball viewed from the entry end for the rope D The relationship between the ball and the thimble 1 = The rope 2 = The ball 3 = The housing 4 = The flange 5 = The bearing race 6 = The bush 7 = A washer 8 = A nut 9 = The metal thimble CLAIMS
1. A rope for spinning, the rope being adapted, at one end, to receive the other end of the rope and to form the rope into a loop, and having, at said other end, a handle which is f ixed with respect to that end of the rope and adapted to allow the handle and the rope to rotate freely relative to one another.
Claims (1)
- 2. A rope according to Claim 1 wherein the handle has rolling bearingmeans between the handle and the rope to allow said relative rotational movement.3. A handle for a rope according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, the handle being adapted to receive said other end of the rope and having means to allow relative rotational movement between the handle and the rope, and further having a tubular extension to surround a portion of the rope projecting from the handle.4. A handle according to Claim 3 wherein said means to allow relative rotational movement are located within said tubular extension.5. A handle according to Claim 3 or Claim 4, in the form of a hollow sphere.6. A rope for spinning substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.7. A handle for a rope for spinning, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.D
