Abstract

A panel assembly comprises a wooden core 1, a wooden frame 2 and an outer reinforcing frame 4 of material having a greater strength than wood, eg. metal, to prevent distortion of the wooden core 1 and frame 2 and to maintain the outer dimensions of the panel. Preferably, a waterproof resilient material, eg. a single, continuous rubber seal 3, is provided between the core 1 and the timber members 5, 6, 7, 8 of the frame 2, to allow movement therebetween while maintaining watertightness. The panel assembly may form part of a wall or be used as a flood resistant door.

Description

A Panel Assemble The present invention relates to a panel assembly, eg a wall panel or door, formed from timber.
Timber wall panels or doors are normally formed from a wooden core and a surrounding wooden frame. However, such timber assemblies tend to deform, eg bow and/or twist, so that gaps are formed through which water can pass, eg during driving rain or flooding.
Such timber assemblies can also suffer from in-plane shear. Thus, when the timber assembly is in the form of a rectangle, it can lose its precise rectangular shape so that gaps are formed between the timber assembly and a surrounding support frame. Here, again, water can pass through such gaps.
It is common practice to form the surrounding wooden frame from pairs of uprights and rails, which are connected together and around the wooden core via glued joints. The wooden parts (ie core, rails and uprights) tend to expand and shrink depending on temperature and degree of dampness, and this can cause the glue to crack, again forming gaps between the joints through which water can pass.
An object of the present invention is to provide a panel assembly comprising a wooden core and a wooden frame therearound in which the above-mentioned disadvantages are avoided.
The invention provides a panel assembly as claimed in Claim 1.
Preferably, the outer reinforcing frame is made of metal, eg aluminium, aluminium alloy or steel, but could alternatively be made of plastics material of sufficient strength.
Preferably, joints are provided in the wooden frame and between the wooden core and the wooden frame allowing relative movement therebetween, each joint having a waterproof resilient material for preventing passage of water through the joint during relative movement of the core and frame.
Thus, a panel assembly may be provided, which is resistant to bowing, twisting and inplane shear, while maintaining its outer dimensions, and within which relative movement of the timber components is possible, and yet remains waterproof. The use of glue is no longer necessary. Such waterproof resilient material may be rubber, eg in the form of a rubber seal, preferably a single continuous rubber seal.
Preferably a liquid sealant is used in conjunction with the rubber or rubber seal.
Alternatively, the waterproof resilient material could be a suitable mastic sealant.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of a panel assembly according to the invention showing the various component parts before assembly, Fig. 2 is a side exploded view of the panel assembly of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of the assembled panel assembly of Figs. 1 and 2.
In the Figures, a panel assembly comprises essentially a wooden core 1, a surrounding wooden frame 2, waterproof resilient material therebetween in the form of a rubber seal 3 and a surrounding rigid frame 4.
The wooden frame 2 is here formed from four separate interlocking parts, ie two uprights 5,6, an upper rail 7 and a lower rail 8. As can be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, the frame members 5 to 8 are shaped with tenons 9 and corresponding mortises 10. Instead of tenons and mortises 9,10 other forms of joints may be used, eg continuous dovetail joints.
The rubber seal 3 is formed from a single, continuous strip having a rectangular centre portion 11 and four extension pieces 12 to 15 at the respective corners of the rectangular centre portion 11. The two uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8 have recesses 16,17 to accommodate the respective end 18,19 of the T-shaped extensions 12 to 15 of the rubber seal 3. The recesses 16,17 are referenced in Fig. 2 only for the joint between the upright 5 and the lower rail 8, but are similar for the other joints between the uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8.
The outer, reinforcing frame 4 is formed from four metal strips 20 to 23 and four metal rectangular corner pieces 24 to 27. As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8 have recesses 28 at each end thereof to accommodate the arms of the respective comer piece 24 to 27. Similarly, the outer edges of the uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8 are provided with recesses 29, ie rebated, to accommodate the respective metal strips 20 to 23.
In the assembled state as shown in Fig. 3, the metal strips 20 to 23 fully cover the metal corner pieces 24 to 27. Thus, the recesses 28 are deeper than the recesses 29, since they must accommodate the metal strips 20 to 23 as well as the corner pieces 24 to 27.
The metal strips 20 to 23 and the corner pieces 24 to 27 have apertures 30 through which nails, screws or other fastening means 31 are inserted into the wooden frame 2, ie the uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8.
The assembled panel as shown in Fig. 3 is extremely resistant to water so as to ensure "Swimming Pool Watertightness". The reinforcing frame 4 resists bowing, twisting and in-plane shear of the panel assembly, while maintaining the outer dimensions within which the timber components can move relative to each other with the help of the rubber seal 3. There is, therefore, no need for any glue between the core 1 and the wooden frame 2, nor between the components of the wooden frame 2, ie the upright 5, 6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8.
Watertightness is enhanced if a liquid sealant is applied (eg by brush) between on the one hand the timber core 1, the uprights 5,6, the upper rail 7 and the lower rail 8, and on the other hand the rubber seal 3. This liquid sealant will fill any cavities or cracks between the timber members and the rubber seal 3, and still allow relative movement of the timber components.
Although the single, continuous rubber seal 3 is preferable, a mastic sealant, eg silicon rubber, could be used instead.
Obviously, suitable timber should be selected for the core 1 and the frame members 5 to 8 to resist water, particularly flood water up to the likely depth of flooding.
A panel assembly as shown in Fig. 3 may be fitted in a corresponding aperture or connected in line to a similar panel assembly or assemblies to form a wall. Preferably, a seamless rubber seal is placed between the panel assembly and the aperture or between the panel assemblies to ensure watertightness. If the panel assembly as shown in Fig. 3 is rotated by 90 , it can be used as a flood resistant door. Obviously, suitable sealing should be provided, for example also as a seamless rubber seal, between such a door and the door frame.
Various modifications may be made to the above-described panel assembly. Thus, instead of a surrounding metal frame 4, a frame of rigid plastics material could be used, eg a high-density polyethylene or polypropelene, or polyamide or a carbon-fibre reinforced plastics material.
