Abstract
222,008. Kalling, B. M. S. Dec. 13, 1923. Resistance girds.-The heating element of an electric furnace is in the form of a cylinder split longitudinally alternately from opposite ends and is connected at two diametrically opposite points so that the current in two parallel zig-zag paths. The element is enclosed in a chamber of carboniferous material and the carbon or graphite terminals connecting the element to the external terminals pass through pipes of refractory material. The furnace is insulated by a loose powdery material such as charcoal breeze. The cylinder a, Figs. 1 - - 3, is split as at b and has projections c, d, e, f upon which it rests, the projections c, d bearing on pads h, k in contact with carbon rods l which pass to terminals m. The rods are enclosed in tubes 0 of graphite. The element a is placed in the graphite hearth n of the furnace g, the hearth being supported on the tubes o which hest on a foundation plate p. Charcoal breeze q is used for insulation.
