Abstract

Fibres, leathers, hairs and the like are coloured by reduction in a slightly acid hot or cold medium of ferricyanides or of ferrocyanides in presence of traces of acid mercury sulphate, and particularly of Denige's reagent, obtained by dissolving the yellow oxide in sulphuric acid. Suitable reducing agents are sugar, glucose, formaldehyde, formic acid, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, naphthols, aniline salts, dextrin, soluble starch, tannins and saponins such as Saponaria vaccaria, French soap-worts or Panama wood. The reducing agents may be previously fixed to the fibre or added to the bath. An example shows the dyeing of wool, silk or cotton in a bath of sugar, acid mercury sulphate and potassium ferricyanide to obtain a blue. With hot treatment greens are obtained in the first stage. Ferrocyanides yield lighter colours and may be employed together with ferricyanides and preferably also ferric chloride or sulphate.
