Abstract
A method of washing the hair or body without the use of rinsing water, comprises applying directly to the dry hair or skin a quantity of pro-diluted aqueous no-rinse shampoo just sufficient thoroughly to wet it, then drying with a towel. The shampoo may be in the form of a sealable container containing a predetermined quantity of no-rinse shampoo, in dilute aqueous solution for direct application to the head or body, sufficient for at least one such application.
Description
No-Rinse Shampoo
This invention relates to a no-rinse shampoo, for use on the head or body, that is to a shampoo which does not require to be rinsed and can be removed with a towel. It also relates to a method of washing hair or washing the body with such shampoo.
No-rinse shampoos have been developed to enable people to shampoo their hair or to wash their body in situations where either there is no water, or their getting access to a source of water, such as a shower or bath, is not possible, for example people in hospital, convalescents, paraplegics, people who are bedridden, travellers, campers and so on.
Conventional no-rinse shampoo and body bath compositions, available for example in the USA, require the body or hair to be wetted thoroughly before application. Thus, restricted access to a source of water is still a problem, even though a plentiful supply of running water, such as is required for rinsing, is not usually required for the preliminary wetting.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of washing hair (or the body) without the use of a water supply, comprising applying directly to the dry hair (or skin) a quantity of pre-diluted aqueous no-rinse shampoo just sufficient thoroughly to wet the hair (and/or skin), then drying the hair (and/or skin).
The invention also provides a sealable container with a predetermined quantity of no-rinse shampoo, in dilute aqueous solution for direct application to the head or body, sufficient for at least one such application. By including in the shampoo composition all the water necessary thoroughly to dampen the hair or body, the problem of access to a source of water is overcome. A further advantage arising from the invention is that as the shampoo is already diluted by the correct amount to suit the active ingredients, it is no longer necessary for the user to take care in dispensing the correct volume of shampoo; the formulation ensures that once the hair or body is thoroughly wetted, the correct quantities of active ingredients will be present. This of course avoids waste, and prevents the application of excessive shampoo which would tend to dry the skin or scalp.
Further, the shampoo is ideal for use by those young children who intensely dislike having their hair washed conventionally.
The proportion of water in the no-rinse shampoo is preferably at least 96%, and in a preferred formulation it is over 98%, by weight.
The active ingredients in the no-rinse shampoo preferably include an anionic surfactant, such as an amphoteric surfactant, and preferably also include a nonionic surfactant such as ethylene oxide, which acts as a superfatting agent to offset the degreasing effect of detergents.
The viscosity of the shampoo is preferably in the range 420 to 460 c.p.s., and the hydrogen ion concentration (as pH) is preferably in the range 6.0 to 6.2. A further advantage in this regard, derived from the invention, is that the pH will be unchanged upon application to the body, and can therefore be closely controlled; conventional shampoos are mixed with tap water which may vary in its alkalinity quite widely.
The container may be a sachet with sufficient shampoo for one application for an average person, for example; alternatively, it may be a larger bottle, optionally with dosage guides indicating the levels of fluid corresponding to integer multiples of an average dose. In this regard, we have discovered that a typical quantity of the no-rinse shampoo, for use as a hair shampoo, is 0.8 gram for each gram weight of hair.
In order that the invention may be better understood, two formulations are given below, by way of example only.
EXAMPLE 1
A no-rinse hair shampoo has the following components:
Name of ingredient Proportion Supplier Miranol 2MCT k ) 0.48% w/w Alfa Chemicals Ltd Etocas 40 (RTM) 0.36% w/w Croda Chemicals Ltd
Propylene Glycol 0.48% w/w B P Chemicals
Tofu Pro 0.072% w/w S Black Ltd
Nipagin.M 0.10% w/w Nipa Laboratories
Nipasol M 0.02% w/w Nipa Laboratories
Herbal Fragrance 0.036% w/w Technarome Ltd
Tween 80 (RT) 0.06% w/w ICI
Carbopol 940() 0.19% w/w B F Goodrich
TEA (Triethanolamine) neutralise to pH6
Water to 100.00
Miranol 2MCT is an amphoteric surfactant, with anionic salts. Etocas 40 is a nonionic surfactant with ethylene oxide, and this provides stability in the presence of the anionic surfactant, acting as a superfatting agent to offset the degreasing effect of detergents.Tofu-Pro is hydrolised soy protein, comprising polypeptide. It will be noted here that the proportion of water is over 98% by weight.
An alternative no-rinse hair shampoo has the following components and properties:

Miranol 2MCT 0.41
Etocas 40 0.031
Propylene Glycol 0.30
Tofu Pro 0.061
Nipagin M 0.085
Nipasol M 0.017
Triethanolamine 0.20
Carbopol 940 0.13
Solan E 0.013
Water to 100.00
Fragrance 0.02
Tween 80 0.03
The pH and Viscosity @ 200C is given below:
pH = 6.15
Viscosity = 250 cps (Spindle 1/10 rpm)
EXAMPLE 3
A no-rinse body shampoo has the following components::
Name of ingredient Proportion Supplier
Rewopol SBFA (30%) 0.50% w/w Rewo Chemicals
Etocas 40 0.03% w/w Croda Chemicals Ltd
Propylene Glycol 0.20% w/w B P Chemicals
Tofu-Pro 0.03% w/w S Black Ltd
Teatree Oil 0.03% w/w PFW Ltd
Nipagin M 0.10% w/w Nipa Laboratories Nipasol .M 0.02% w/w Nipa Laboratories
Carbopol 940 0.15% w/w
TEA 0.20% w/w
Water to 100.00
This composition has a pH at 250C of 6.26, and a viscosity at 25"C of 165 cps (spindle 1/20 rpm).
Rewopol SBFA 30 is an anionic surfactant.
Although in these examples it is envisaged that the shampoo would be applied straight from the container on to the body or head of the person, it is of course possible to dispense the shampoo in the form of impregnated wipes or other applicators. Further, although the examples given mention specific active ingredients, it will be appreciated that no-rinse shampoos with different ingredients are also covered by the present invention.
