Abstract

An intranasal latex preshaped balloon consists of a 2-way valve to allow inflation and deflation, an anterior retaining collar to prevent posterior displacement and a latex balloon (see Figure 1). The latex and preformed shape allows low pressure inflation of the balloon to conform to the intranasal cavity without posterior displacement and with sufficient pressure to arrest bleeding. <IMAGE>

Description

INTRANASAL LATEX BALLOON This invention relates to an intranasal latex balloon for use in the control of epistaxis (nose bleeds) and for intranasal packing following nasal surgery.
Traditionally gauze packing or sialastic balloons have been used to control epistaxis and for intranasal packing following surgery.
However gauze packing demands skill, is often ineffective, takes time and is usually painful. The available balloons are all ineffective due to an Inherent inability to conform to the nasal cavity contour and tend to be displaced posteriorly into the nasopharynx According to the present invention there is provided an intranasal latex balloon comprising of a 2-way valve to allow inflation and deflation, an anterior retaining collar to prevent posterior displacement and a balloon of a preformed shape which when inflated conforms exactly to the shape of the nasal cavity and of sufficient pressure to stop bleeding from epistaxis or intranasal surgery.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the deflated preformed shape and component parts; Figure 2 shows the balloon inflated in the nose in a coronal section; and Figure 3 shows the balloon inflated in the nose in a sagittal section.
Referring to the diagrams the intranasal latex balloon consists of a 2-way valve 1 to allow inflation and deflation, an anterior retaining collar 2 and a preformed shaped latex balloon 3 .
The deflated latex balloon is inserted into the nasal cavity upto the anterior retaining collar which is secured to the external nose with adhesive tape. The balloon is then inflated by injecting air via the 2-way valve until the balloon conforms to the internal anatomy of the nasal cavity as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 and exerts enough pressure to arrest the bleeding. After a suitable period of time the balloon is deflated via the 2-way valve and removed from the nasal cavity.

Claims (5)

1 The intranasal balloon is made out of latex and of a preformed shape such that when inflated conforms to the anatomical shape of the nasal cavity.
2 The intranasal balloon as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the preformed shape, low inflation pressures arrests bleeding.
3 The intranasal balloon as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the preformed shape and anterior retaining collar prevents posterior displacement on inflation.
4 The intranasal balloon as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein the 2-way valve allows inflation and deflation.
5 An intranasal balloon substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
