Abstract
A computer system which enables a picture image and textual information from a database package to be combined, for example as a visitor's pass card, comprises, in addition to the usual central processing unit, keyboard and screen, a video source for providing signals representative of a picture of a subject to the central processing unit, a frame grabber for converting picture signals in the central processing unit into digital form, means for storing digital signals provided by the frame grabber board, a database for storing and providing basic textual information on the subject to the central processing unit, and control means for causing digital signals stored in the storage means to be entered in the database in conjunction with the textual information on the subject, and for providing the textual information and digital picture signals together on demand.
Description
COMPUTER SYSTEM
This invention relates to a computer system.
Computer systems are well known in which signals representative of a picture are fed from a video input source, for example a video camera or a video recorder, to the central processing unit of a computer, which also comprises a keyboard and a screen, and the central processing unit causes the picture to be reproduced on the computer screen.
According to the present invention there is provided a computer system comprising a central processing unit, a keyboard for entering information into the central processing unit, a screen for displaying information from the central processing unit, a video input source for providing signals representative of a picture of a subject to the central processing unit, a frame grabber board for converting picture signals in the central processing unit at any time into digital form, storage means for storing digital signals provided by the frame grabber board, a database for storing and providing basic textual information on the subject to the central processing unit, and control means for causing digital signals stored in said storage means to be entered in the database in conjunction with the textual information on the subject, and for providing said textual information and said digital picture signals together on demand.
The control means provided in the computer system according to the present invention enables the database to interact with the frame grabber board. Both the frame grabber board and the database may be "off the shelf" items. For example a computer system in accordance with the present invention may utilise a Digithurst 'PB Card' as frame grabber board and
Precision Software's 'Superbase 4', which runs under
Microsoft Windows 3, as database.
A computer system in accordance with the present invention enables a picture image and textual information from a database package to be combined.
In particular, a live picture may be captured, frozen and stored in a database, the computer system therefore being a real time video system utility.
The control means of the computer system in accordance with the present invention is a set of dynamic link library routines which reside in memory and which, when called upon, will perform the interface links between the database and the frame grabber board.
The function library comprised within the control means preferably includes the following functions:
OpenVideo The OpenVideo function is used to open up a video window on the screen and to control the size of the window and it takes four parameters to control the size of the window. Only one video window can be open at a time. If a second video window is opened while there is already one video window open on the screen then OpenVideo will close the first window before it opens a second one.
CloseVideo The CloseVideo function shuts a video window. If there is no video window open, CloseVideo will do nothing.
LiveVideo The LiveVideo function is used when the video window is showing. LiveVideo changes the image from 'frozen' (a still picture) to 'live' (moving video).
FreezeVideo The FreezeVideo function is complementary to the LiveVideo function. FreezeVideo changes the video window from LiveVideo to a still picture.
SaveTarga SaveTarga takes one parameter, 'fname', which is the name of a file. The SaveTarga function saves the current screen picture in the file 'fname'.
If the video image is live, then the SaveTarga function freezes it, saves the image and then makes it live again.
LoadTarga The LoadTarga function is complementary to the SaveTarga function. The LoadTarga function displays the image contained in 'fname' when the video window is open.
The control means may include further functions for assisting the operator, for example AdjustVideo,
MoveVideo, CursorOn and CursorOff.
One embodiment of a computer system according to the invention may be operated to design on the screen a data entry form containing data from the database and having an image capture area determined within the data entry form. A video input source, for example a camcorder, can be pointed either at a moving or still object and the image of the object, scaled to the size of the image capture area, can be seen live on the screen and can then be frozen.
If the frozen image is found to be unsatisfactory the image can be made live again and then frozen again and this process can be performed as many times as required until the desired view or picture is achieved.
Then the image and record are saved and can be reproduced whenever the record is retrieved. The process as described takes only a matter of seconds.
The video subject does not have to be at the same location as the computer system. Accordingly, the system can review video recordings and combine these with textual information from files so that the files are documented with pictorial information taken from recordings made in the field.
The computer system in accordance with the present invention also has particular application in relation to security and particularly the location of visitors and staff at any organisation.
In such use for a visitor to certain premises a receptionist enters the person's name on the computer, the computer may check to see if the person is already on the system and, if the person is a new visitor, information about the person is entered which may include such items as address, car registration number and purpose of visit. While this is being done the visitor will be in the vicinity of the video camera lens so that the receptionist can view the visitor on the camera screen and, when satisifed with the display, freeze the moving image. If a mistake is made the process can be repeated or amended. The system date and time stamps the record and a pass card for the visitor can be printed out, laminated and, if required, magnetically encoded for security lock systems.
When the visitor leaves the premises the pass card is returned to reception, when the display of visitors currently on the premises is called up and the visitor who is due to leave is selected and the date and time of departure are recorded.
