Abstract
A multi-purpose cosmetic composition which contains a cosmetically acceptable solvent volatile at room temperature and a glycerol ester of polymerized rosin, said composition leaving a waterproof film upon application.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Multi-purpose cosmetic composition
This invention relates to a multi-purpose cosmetic composition which is readily applied by spreading and leaves a waterproof film. Suitable cosmetic products which can be prepared from the composition include:
hair touch-up, eyebrow coloring, eyeshadow, leg make-up, face make-up, blusher, mascara and the like.
The advantages of waterproof cosmetics which are easily applied are obvious. Waterproof cosmetics have a longer cosmetic effect than their non-waterproof counterparts since they are less susceptible to moisture from the human body or from swimming, bathing, etc. Hence, touch-ups to maintain the original effect are
required less frequently. Moreover, since the present invention is easily applied, it is simpler for the consumer to achieve the desired effect.
In accordance with the present invention, the cosmetic composition is essentially in the form of a
lipophylic cream gel comprising a cosmetically acceptable solvent volatile at room temperature such as
petroleum distillate which is both economical and readily available, and a glycerol ester of polymerized rosin which normally exists as a mixture of the mono-, di- and tri-esters. The glycerol ester of polymerized rosin is the waterproof film-former component of the cosmetic composition. Preferred embodiments of the instant invention further comprise agents for controlling the viscosity of the product which modify the attributes of the film including plasticizers, organically modified hectorites, polymers, and any polar, cosmetically acceptable liquid and, optionally, a cosmetically acceptable waxy base.
The multi-purpose cosmetic composition of this invention preferably comprises in parts by weight:
Petroleum distillate 30 -70
Glycerol ester of polymerized rosin 5-15 Oleyl alcohol 3- 6
Quaternium hectorite 3- 4
Waxy base 6- 8
The cosmetically suitable volatile solvents employed herein are hydrocarbon solvents, especially Cg to C11 iso- and straight chained paraffins having a boiling point at least about 1 00 C to about 21 5 C.
Glycerol esters of polymerized rosin which are suitable in the present invention can be prepared by methods generally known in the art. The chief constituents of rosin, which is derived from pine trees, are resin acids of the abietic and primarictypes having the general formula C1gH29COOH and a phenanthrene nucleus. Upon polymerization of rosin, heterogenous dimers are predominantly produced with lesser amounts of monomer and higher homologues. The esterification reaction conditions of the polymerized rosin are known to those skilled in the art and normally result in a mixture of mono-, di- and tri-esters which can be employed in the present invention.Glycerol esters of polymerized rosin are also readily commercially available, including the glycerol ester of polymerized rosin available under the trade name Poly-pale Ester 10 (Hercules, Inc.).
Depending on the type of cosmetic product which is prepared from the above base composition and the desired effect, color pigments, dyes, minerals, and agents to control the viscosity of the product which are generally known in the art may be added thereto.
Preferred colorants include iron oxides, titanium dioxides, ultramarine blue, titanated mica, and mica.
Agents for controlling the viscosity of the product include plasticizers, organically modified hectorites, polymers, and any polar, cosmetically suitable liquid. To plasticize and detackifythe base composition and to act as a cosolvent any fatty alcohols and/or acids known for such purposes to those skilled in the art can be utilized, but saturated or unsaturated fatty alcohols having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g., linolenyl alcohol, linoleyi alcohol, oleyl alcohol, steary alcohol, cetyl alcohol and myristyl alcohol are preferred herein. Oleyl alcohol is especially preferred. Suitable organically modified hectorites include commercially available quaternium hectorites, e.g., quaternium- 18 hectorite (N.L. Chemicals).Polymers of low molecular weight are also useful for controlling viscosity, and of these, low density polyethylene (LDPE) is preferred. Examples of acceptable polar liquids for use with hectorites are lanolin, ethanol, isopropanol, and water. A particularly preferred agent for controlling viscosity of hectorite is propylene carbonate.
Any known cosmetically suitable wax, oil, semi-solid liquid or combination thereof can be used herein as a waxy base. Examples include carnauba wax, ozokerite, natural and synthetic beeswaxes, candelilla wax, isopropyi myristate, paraffin, bayberry wax, hydrogenated castor oil, vegetable oils, mineral oil, and lanolin or its derivatives. Preferred waxes are carnauba wax and ozokerite.
The above base composition and cosmetic products prepared therefrom can be prepared by any of the art-recognized techniques to obtain a uniform dispersion, e.g., by high-speed milling.
The following examples serve to illustrate specific embodiments of the present invention and not to limit the scope thereof. Unless otherwise noted, the following compositions were prepared by a high-speed mill.
The rosin ester, petroleum distillate, waxes and quaternium hectorite were charged into the mill. After the waxes were melted at 85"C and the hectorite was uniformly dispersed by high-speed milling, propylene carbonate in an amount sufficient to form a gel was added. Thereafter, colorants were added and the milling continued until a uniform dispersion was obtained. The figures indicate parts by weight.

Claims (15)
1. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition which comprises:
a. a cosmetically acceptable solvent volatile at room temperature, and
b. a glycerol ester of polymerized rosin.
2. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1 wherein the volatile solvent is petroleum distillate.
3. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1, which further comprises a fatty alcohol of from about 12 to about 18 carbon atoms.
4. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1 or 3 which further comprises an organically modified clay.
5. A multi-purpose composition according to claim 3 wherein the fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of linolenyl alcohol, linoleyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol and myristyl alcohol.
6. A multi-purpose composition according to claim 5 wherein the fatty alcohol is oleyl alcohol.
7. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 4 wherein the organically modified clay is quaternium hectorite.
8. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1 or 3 which further comprises a waxy base.
9. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 8 wherein the waxy base comprises carnauba wax and ozokerite.
10. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1 or 3 which further comprise colorants.
11. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 10 wherein the colorants are color pigments, dyes and minerals.
12. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 1 to 3 which further comprises an agent to control the viscosity of the composition.
13. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 12 wherein said agent is propylene carbonate.
14. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition which comprises:
a. 30-70 parts by weight petroleum distillate;
b. 5-15 parts by weight glycerol ester of polymerized rosin;
c. 3-6 parts by weight oleyl alcohol;
d. 3-4 parts by weight quaternium hectorite; and
e. 6-8 parts by weight waxy base.
15. A multi-purpose cosmetic composition according to claim 14 wherein the waxy base comprises carnauba wax and ozokerite.
