211,542. Mackenzie, M., Sylvester, J., and Outwin, E. Nov. 2, 1922. Column stills and rectifiers.-A columnar apparatus for bringing gases or vapours and liquids into intimate contact comprises superposed plates or trays 2, the overflow orifices 13 of which are surrounded by webs 11 so that the heavier liquid from the base of the tray is discharged to the tray next below. The hoods 7 which surround the gas or vapour inlets 3 have a. number of depending concentric webs 4 diminishing in depth from the centre, and causing the gases or vapours to pass repeatedly through the liquid. Alternate webs 5 have apertures 7 above the surface of the liquid. The column may be used for fractionating the vapours obtained by distilling oil used for scrubbing coke-oven gases. The overflow devices prevent accumulation of water on the plates and enable vapours of 90 per cent benzol to be obtained at the top of the column.
