Abstract
211,027. Rosenhain, W., and Grogan, J. D. Aug. 17, 1922. Alloys.-A process for improving commercial aluminium containing silicon in solid solution consists in introducing into molten aluminium a small proportion of a metal such as calcium, barium, or beryllium, which will form with the silicon a compound insoluble in solid aluminium, so as to obtain aluminium of high electrical conductivity notwithstanding the presence of calcium and silicon. The calcium may be added to the aluminium in the form of an alloy of calcium and aluminium. Alternatively a suitable calcium compound may be reduced together with the usual aluminium compound by a known process for reducing the latter. For example in the electrolysis of alumina in a bath of molten cryolite, calcium salts such as calcium fluoride may be added to the bath in such proportion that a small quantity of calcium passes into the aluminium to combine with the silicon present.
