Description
SPECIFICATION
Impact-resistant wear plate
This invention relates to impact-resistant wear plates for lining or covering surfaces, such as of chutes or conveyors, subject to the impact and abrasion of minerals or other abrasive materials or products in industrial plants, for example metal smelting plants or foundries.
It is known that ceramic materials can be made such more wear-resistant than metals, such as mild steel, which might economically be used for material-handling surfaces but ceramic material is vulnerable to impact damage, especially when used in the form of tiles laid in edge-abutment as a surface covering.
The object of the invention is to utilise ceramic tiles as a wear-resistant surface-covering which is resistant also to impact damage.
According to the invention, a wear plate comprises a wear-resistant surface layer of an array of ceramic tiles set in a bed of elastomeric material bonded to and extending as a cushioning fillet between adjacent tiles and peripherally around the array of tiles as well as behind the tiles.
In such a wear plate the elastomeric material, which may be natural or synthetic rubber or a plastics material such as finely cellular polyurethane or a resiliently deformable polymer, isolates the tiles from side contact, one with another, and permits the tiles under impact to move with deflection of their elastomeric bed and thus absorb shock without damage.
Preferably the tiles, which may be of any interfitting plan shape, are set into the bed as inserts in moulding of the bed, preferably injection moulding of the elastomeric material into a closed mould in which the tiles are held in the required array.
The sides of the tiles, at least in part, may be tapered from back to front so that they are of dovetail section for keying into the elastomeric material.
The plan shape of the tiles may be indented so as to define between adjacent tiles additional cushioning fillets of elastomeric material, for example, at four-tile junctions, circular fillets around ceramic cylindrical plugs, which may be tapered.
The elastomeric bed may be carried by a mild steel or other backing plate which may have means, such as a screw-threaded stud and nut, for securing the wear plate in place as a surface covering.
The invention is illustrated by way of example on the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation,
Fig. 3 is a sectionai elevation, on the line A-A of Fig. 1, of one embodiment of a wear plate in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 4 is a plan of another embodiment,
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation on the line A-A of Fig. 4,
Figs. 6 and 7 are end elevations of the wear plate of Fig. 4, and
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are respectively a plan, front elevation and end elevation of a tile of the wear plate of Fig. 4.
The wear plate of Figs. 1 to 3 comprises an array of square tiles 1, with half-tiles 2, arranged symmetrically staggered, half-overlapping in adjacent rows, moulded into a bed 3 of rubber which also extends between and around the tiles as cushioning fillets 4.
The tiles, which may be of an alumina or other suitable hard-wearing strong ceramic material, are bonded to the rubber by having pre-treated, in known manner, and incorporated as inserts, in a closed mould, in injection moulding of the rubber.
As an example of dimensions, the tiles 1 are 50 mm square and 12 mm thick and the rubber bed 3 is 3 mm thick with fillerts 4 of 1.5 mm thickness. The sides of the tiles may be tapered, at 2 0--5 0, from back to front so that they have a dovetail section.
The fillets 4 not only cushion adjacent tiles but are themselves wear-resistant and prevent the penetration of abrasive or other damaging particles of material between the tiles.
The rubber bed 3 may be secured, such as by a contact adhesive, directly to a surface requiring a wear-resistant facing.
Alternatively, as shown, the bed 3 is carried by a mild steel backing plate 5, to which the bed 3 is adhesively secured or bonded, and a screwthreaded stud 6 and nut 7 are provided for mounting on a surface to be faced.
The wear plate of Figs. 4 to 10 differs from that of Figs. 1 to 3 in the shape of the tiles 8 which have arcuately indented and tapered corners 9, see Figs. 8 to 10, which define, at junctions of four tiles, enlarged circular fillets 10 of rubber around ceramic cylindrical plugs 11 which may extend as spigots into or through the bed 3 of elastomeric material.
