Spigot-and-socket joints with packing at mouth of socket.-A sectional pipe line consists of a number of socket sections 1, Fig. 2, having a flange 3 upon each end, jointed together by spigot sections 2, having flanges 5 formed at a distance from their ends so as to leaver spigots 6 to enter the socket sections 1, packing-rings 7 being provided on the spigots 6 against which the flanges 3, 5 of adjacent sections abut. The flanges may be formed with a bayonet-joint consisting of hooks projecting outwardly from the flanges upon one section and adapted to engage behind the flanges of the next section; or the joint may be closed together by a threaded rod or bolt positioned in a bracket and bearing upon the end of the pipe line. In order to remove a section 28, Fig. 9, from the pipe line, the end of the line is closed by a blind end 24, which abuts against a pipe 25 adapted to slide within a fixed pipe 26. A spring 27 is located between the closed ends of the pipes 25, 26, so that, by pressing back the adjacent pipe 24 against the tension of the spring 27, the section 28 can be removed. To prevent the turning of a section of pipe, a block formed in two parts is clamped to the pipe and is positioned in a fixed bracket. Suitable jointing pieces, which may be straight or bent, are shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
