Description

SPECIFICATION Fixing system for rake verge tiles This invention relates to a fixing system for roof tiles, and in particular for rake verge tiles.
Rake verge tiles are tiles which overly the main roof tiles at verges and which cover the exposed edges of the main tiles so as to provide an attractive finish to a tiled roof at a verge. Such tiles do however present difficulties when it comes to fixing them to a roof.
Roof tiles are conventionally fixed in placed by securing them to the roof battens. However in the case of rake verge tiles this is difficult to achieve since the rake verge tiles overly the main roof tiles rather than the battens. The only parts of the battens that are available for securement of the verge tiles are the ends of the battens, and it is difficult to secure the verge tiles to the ends of the battens without spoiling the finish of the verge.
Viewed from one broad aspect there is disclosed herein a verge tile for a roof having main tiles located on battens, the verge tile having an upper portion for overlying a main tile at the verge of the roof and a depending portion to extend over the verge, the inner surface of the depending portion having a step provided with an aperture for receiving a locating member secured to the end of a roof batten.
Viewed from another broad aspect, there is disclosed herein a fixing system for verge tiles, comprising a clip that may be fixed to the end of a roof batten, wherein said clip engages in an aperture provided in a stepped portion of the inner surface of a verge tile, whereby said tile may be secured to said batten.
By means of this arrangement, at least in its preferred forms, it is possible simply and securely to fix a verge tile to a roof batten in an unobtrusive manner that does not spoil the look of the roof verge. By providing the aperture in a stepped portion of the inner surface, there is no need for the aperture to extend through to the outer surface. The clip can have a portion which engages against an internal part of the tile rather than the outer surface.
The clip may be simply nailed to the batten, and- is preferably provided with a series of fixing holes so that the clip may be nailed at a position which is the best fit to the centre of the batten end.
The aperture may be formed in the tile during manufacture thereof and will generally extend parallel to the verge. The step is perferably in the form of a single step, but a double step could be provided so as to form a projecting lug.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a verge tile fixing clip.
Figure 2 is a view showing the clip of Fig. 1 nailed to a roof batten, Figure 3 is a perspective view of a rake verge tile showing the aperture therein, and Figure 4 is a view of the verge tile of Fig. 3 showing how the clip engages in the aperture.
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 and 2 there is shown a verge tile fixing clip 1. The fixing clip comprises a main elongate member 2 that is substantially C-shaped in cross-section and a clip member 3 formed integrally with the elongate member at one end thereof. The clip member 3 is L-shaped with one limb 4 extending generally parallel to the elongate mem- ber 2.
The elongate member 2 is provided with a series of fixing holes 5 by means of which the fixing clip may be nailed to a batten 6 as shown in Fig. 2. By providing the fixing clip with a plurality of fixing holes 5, a nail 7, or similar fixing member, may pass through the fixing hole that provides the best positioning with respect to the centre of the batten.
In Fig. 3 there is shown a rake verge tile comprising a curved upper portion 8 and a depending side portion 9 which extends downwardly from one end of the upper portion. In use, it is the depending side portion 9 that covers the ends of the battens thus hiding the battens from view at the edge of a tiled roof.
The inside surface 10 of the side portion 9 is provided with a stepped portion 11 in which there is an aperture 12 extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the verge tile. The aperture 12 is of such a size that it will readily engage the clip member 3, as shown in Fig. 4, with sufficient play to allow for adjustment of the verge tile without the engagement of the clip in the aperture being too loose. In addition, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the clip member 3 is slightly bent so as to provide a slight spring-action so that when the clip engages in the aperture, the clip positively holds the tile by means of the resiliency of the clip.
While Fig. 4 shows the clip engaging the aperture in the tile without being nailed to a betten, it will be appreciated that this is simply for convenience and clarity of the drawings. In use the clip will be nailed to a batten first and then the verge tile will be positioned with the aperture engaging the clip. Fine adjustment of the position of the tile may be made by using the play of the clip in the aperture.
Normally the fixing clip will be nailed to the batten so that the clip member points up the slope of the roof. In this way the verge tile will be securly held in place by the fixing clip since the effect of gravity will cause the clip member to fully engage in the aperture.
