Abstract
By the addition of a horizontal groove into each vertical side of the screwdriver slot of a cross cut screw head, a rigid attachment of the screw to a complementary screw driver can be achieved. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Rigid drive screw system
This invention relates to a novel head design for screw type fixings.
Screw fasteners have traditionally been used for both economical and design reasons for the fixing of one or more pieces of material together. Various types of head design have been tried in an attempt to improve both security and operational characteristics. This sys tem. by nature of the novel head design, will take both security and ease of operation further than previous designs.
Using the new head means that the screw is positively attached to the driving tool giving a unique accuracy of drive position and torque. The screw may thus be torque loaded to give a scientifically calculated strength as a bonding agent.
Figure I shows that the head design accepts a tool drive in a way that makes pressure on the screw unnecessary, the thread itself would accommodate inward or outward movement.
The head design would also mean that the screw being physically attached to the driver, a one hand only operation would be required, very important where access is restricted and alleviating the danger of dropping the screw into the area being worked.
The driver would not be prone to slipping from the head to damage surrounding area during insertion and retraction, important where surrounding surfaces are delicate.
The screw head could be incorporated into any conventional screw head type, the slot itself could vary in size without affecting performance or characteristics of operation.
Figure 2 shows a dual tipped screw driver, conventional at one head and design head at the other. By simply reversing trhe blade in the handle desired action is obtained. This screw can be operated as conventioal slot screw without need for special driver. Multi head type screw drivers are commonplace and no claim is made for this design other than the tip itself to match the screw head.
The exact angles formed within the design are not critical, the diamond shape made itself might be varied to suit needs.
Fig. 3 indicates possible manufacturing technique only, alternative processes of manufacture may be required and do not effect the claim as technique may vary form one manufacturer to another rigid drive screw system.
Operational advantages: 1. Positive attachment to screw driver for difficult positional work-one hand access only required.
2. Will not slip from head to damage surrounding area during difficult initial part of insertion into work.
3. Could accept torque loading in basic form if not countersunk type.
4. Does not require the special driver as conventional slot drive incorporated.
5. Could be used with wrench equipment with adaptor for rapid insertion.
7. Could eliminate the need to keep multihead types of screw.
8. Would almost certainly replace 'coachbolt' fixings for heavy timber work.
1. A rigid drive screw incorporating horizontal cuts in vertical lands and parallel to the cross cut.
2. Compatibley shaped driver head as in claims 1 to accept screw head.
