Abstract
In a reversible plough point mounting the plough point (10) has a locating engagement with a point holder (20) of a plough or other cultivator when the point (10) is secured to the holder (20). Such location is positively effected by a projection and recess (24, 28) engagement between cooperating faces (21, 22) of the point (10) and holder (20) and in the example shown an elongate rib (24) on the under side (21) of the point (10) engages a groove (28) in the face (22) of the holder (20) when they are secured together by a bolt (18) passing through a central through hole (16) in the point (10) and through the holder (20). Thus the point (10) can be firmly held against any movement on the holder (20) and when it is desired to reverse the point (10) the bolt (16) is simply slackened sufficiently to enably the point (10) to be disengaged from the holder (20) and then turned through 180 DEG for locating re-engagement and tightening down by the bolt (18). Point replacement can be effected by removal of the bolt (18). A boss (26) is also shown about the hole (16) for engaging a recess (30) in the holder (20) to resist shear loading on the bolt (18). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Reversible point mounting
The present invention relates to the mounting of share tips or points on plough mould board assemblies or on other cultivators.
Normally, the point is fastened to a point holder by two bolts which securely mount the point. The point is removed for replacement or reversal by undoing the two bolts. Such a reversible plough point is described in GB patent specification number2100562to C. V. R.
Dowdeswel I.
One disadvantage of the above-described arrangementisthatthe bolts must be completely removed in orderto allow reversal of the point and as will be appreciated such removal can be extremely difficult as a result of accumulation of dirt, rust and the like on the bolts due to their exposed mounting. A further disadvantageisthathe bolt adjacentthefree end of the point is relatively close to this free end and to the end ofthe point holderand is therefore likely to suffer wear if the point is allowed to wear down to the point holder.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved form of mounting for a plough point.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a point member having athrough-holeformedthereinfor receiving fastening means for securing said point membertoapointholderofa plough orother cultivator and wherein a surface of said point member is arranged to abut a cooperating surface of said point holderand is contouredfor locating engagementwith a cooperating formation of said point holder whereby to inhibit relative sliding movement of said point member and said point holderwhen said point member is securedto said point holder.
The present invention also provides a plough point arrangement comprising a point member and a point holder having fastening means for preventing relative movement of said point member and said point holder away from one another and second means comprising cooperating abutment means on said point member and said point holder respectively arranged to engage one anotherto prevent their relative sliding movement.
In a preferred form of the present invention the abutting surfaces of the point and point holder have a recess or recesses formed in one surface and a complementary projection or projections formed on the othersurface. The point and point holder are secured together by a single bolt passing through the two and the cooperating recess and projection engagement positively pervents relative rotation ofthe point and point holder about the bolt when the latter is fully tightened.
Preferably the recess is an elongate groove in the point holderwhilethe projection is a cooperating rib on the back of the point but if desired, the point holder may be ribbed and received by a cooperating groove in the back ofthe point. An advantage of a plough point according to the present invention is that it can be secured to the point holder by a single bolt which can therefore be positioned ata greaterdistancefrom the tip of the point holder than is normally the case, the bolt, therefore, being less exposed to wear. In addition, it is not necessary to remove the bolt in order to reverse the point, it merely being necessaryto loosen the bolt sufficiently to allow rotation of the pointthrough 180 degrees.
The present invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an inverse plan view of a first embodi mentofa plough point according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a section along the line ll-ll of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partial section through an assembly of the plough point of Figure 1 and a point holder; Figure4 is a plan viewsimilarto Figure 1 of a portion of a modified form of plough point; and
Figure 5 is a section through the point of Figure 4 along the line V-V.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3, these show a plough point 10 which is generally planar and of rectangular (or parallelogrammic) shape in plan view having opposed bevelled cutting edges 12 and 14. The point is provided with a central through-hole 16 which re- ceives a bolt 18 securing the point to a point holder 20.
The through-hole 16 is conveniently shaped to receive a bolt having a correspondingly formed head to provide some protection for the latter.
Ascan beseen in Figures 1 and 2a lowersurface21 ofthe point which abuts an upper surface 22 ofthe point holderisformed with an axial rib 24extending into the bevelled edges 12 and 14. The rib 24 intersects the through-hole 16 where it opens into a generally cylindrical boss 26. The rib 24 and boss 26 cooperate with a corresponding groove 28 and recess 30 formed on the adjoining surface 22 of the point holder 20. The rib 24 acts as a key to prevent relative rotation ofthe point 10 and point holder 20 aboutthe axis ofthe bolt 18. The boss 26 conveniently serves as a strengthen ingand locatingfeatureto relievetheboltofshear stresses. The rib 24 also strengthens the point 10.
The provision of a cooperating rib 24 and groove 28 meansthatonly one bolt 18 is required to mount the point to the point holder, in contrast with two bolts 32 and 34 shown in dotted lines, required in known arrangements. The use of a single bolt 18 enables this to be positioned furtherfrom the free end ofthe point holderthan the bolt 32 in the known arrangementthus avoiding the possibility of the bolt inadvertently becoming worn asthetip ofthe point 10 is worn down to the point holder. An additional advantage is that, whereas with the known arrangement it is necessary to remove both bolts in orderto reverse the point a taskwhich is often made extremely difficult by contamination and rusting of the boltstogetherwith the risk of losing the bolts, once removed, it is necessary only to loosen the bolt 18 of the plough point shown in the drawingsto allow rotation ofthe plough pointthrough 180 degrees before the bolt is again tightened.
The drawing originally filed was informal and the print here reproduced is taken
from a later filed formal copy.
Pa rticularly in the case of a plough having several
plough bodies, such as a reversible plough, the number of point mounting bolts and nuts at 18 is thus halved which not only reduces the cost of manufac- ture but, more importantly considerably reduces the time in reversing or replacing the points especially when it is usually difficultto slacken or remove the bolt nuts owing to wear and corrosion.
Figures4and5 showa modificationtothe plough point of Figures 1 to 3 in which the boss 26 is omitted.
The rib 24, therefore, is formed in two halves terminating atoradjacentthethrough-hole 16.
in a further alternative arrangement the back of the point 10 may be provided with one or more studs or bosses engaging a corresponding recess or recesses in the face ofthe holder20 orviceversa again in a symmetrical manner to permit location of the point on reversal.
