Abstract

A steering wheel normally mounted on a steering column is axially spaced by using a boss (1) and an extension (7, 12). The steering wheel extension (7) is fixed to the steering wheel boss by six bolts (8), nuts (9) and locking washers (10). The existing steering wheel (11) is fitted to the male end of the steering wheel extension (12) and secured with a nut (13) and washer (14). An extension shroud (15) is fitted over the steering wheel extension before the steering wheel is fitted. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Extension to automobile steering wheel This invention refers to the extension to the steering wheel of an automobile.
Most automobiles have a steering column fitted, which has a standard length according to the model of the automobile. This length is determined by a design to give the average driver a comfortable and safe driving position.
Where the distance from the clutch and brake pedals is less than the length from the heel to the knee of the driver, a splayed legs style of driving has to be adopted. More importantly, when the legs in this situation are restricted by the steering wheel the clutch and brake pedals have to be operated at an unnatural angle.
The extension to the steering wheel would enable the motor agents selling the cars to offer a driving position to suit the tall driver, giving these tall drivers the equivalent legroom enjoyed by the average driver. This would increase sales of automobiles, in the small and medium ranges, to customers who have long legs.
On most cars in the small and medium ranges the tall driver is only offered an adjustable driving seat. The tall driver, under these conditions, would have to push the seat back to its full extent and drive with the arms extended, which on a long journey could be uncomfortable. In most cases a splayed legs style of driving would also have to be adopted.
According to the present invention there is provided an extension to an automobile steering wheel. Fig. 1 shows an existing steering wheel boss assessory (1) which has two pins (2) which align with the indicator self cancelling mechanism. The female serrations, splines or tapered hexagon (3), according to the model, are fitted onto the car inner steering column (4) and secured by existing nut (5) and washer (6). This steering wheel boss is not part of the present invention.. The steering wheel extension (7) is fixed to the steering wheel boss by six bolts (8), nuts (9) and locking washers (10). The existing steering wheel (11) is fitted to the male end of the steering wheel extension (12) and secured with an additional nut (13) and washer (14) To enhance the trim of the car an extension shroud (15) may be fitted. This would be placed over the steering wheel extension before the steering wheel is fitted.
1. An extension to the steering wheel of an automobile. Fig. 1 shows the extension (7) fitted to the inner steering column of a car (4), in conjunction with a steering wheel boss (1) which is already available as an assessory.
The boss is secured by existing nut (5) and washer (6). The extension is secured to the boss by six bolts (8), nuts (9) and locking washers (10). The serrations, splines or tapered hexagon (3) are produced according to the car model. The existing steering wheel (11) is fitted to the male end of the steering wheel extension (12) and secured by an additional nut (13) and washer (14). This extension would provide additional leg-room for tall drivers.
2. An extension to the steering wheel of an automobile as claimed in Claim 1, which would increase sales of automobiles in the small and medium ranges by making them available as a comfortable and safe vehicle for tall drivers.
CLAIMS Amendments to the claims have been filed, and have the following effect: Claims 1 and 2 above have been deleted or textually amended.
New or textually amended claims have been filed as follows: 1. The present invention refers to a steering wheel extension which adapts the existing steering wheel of a motor vehicle to provide additional knee-room for exceptionally tall drivers.
This invention provides the extra knee-room only for for those that need it, and not for all drivers as is the case when factory fitted steering aids are supplied with the motor vehicle.
The existing steering wheel is removed and a boss (1) of the type already known, and used when "sport" steering wheels are fitted, is fitted to the inner steering column of the motor vehicle (4) ensuring that pins (2) align with the indicator self cancelling mechanism.
The boss is secured to the inner steering column (4) with existing nut (5) and washer (6).
The steering wheel extension (12), which has the same steering wheel fix as the existing inner steering column (4), is welded to a circular plate (7) which has six holes in it drilled to align with the holes in the boss (1), and is attached to the boss by six bolts (8), nuts (9) and washers (10). The existing steering wheel (11) is fitted to the steering wheel extension (12) and secured with new nut (13) and washer (14).
To enhance the trim of the vehicle an extension shroud (15) could be fitted.
2. An extension to the steering wheel as claimed in Claim 1, would enable the existing steering wheel to be re-fitted. This steering wheel will have undergone stringent impact damage performance testing. Consequently, it does not create an additional hazard for the driver as would be the case if a new steering wheel, which had not been tested, were fitted.
3. An extension to the steering wheel of a motor vehicle as claimed in Claim 1, which
