Circulating or passing liquids through materials. -A machine for the dyeing or like treatment of tops in ball form, comprises a trough e in which the balls are placed end to end resting on a bottom plate e<2> centrally perforated, the balls being held in position by a similarly-perforated cover f consisting of a number of hinged sections; and means are provided for forcing liquor positively and vertically through the material in one direction, for instance, upwardly from beneath the perforated bottom plate, and for allowing the liquor to percolate by gravity or to be drawn through the materials in the opposite direction. Two, three or more troughs may be placed side by side, with a common lid or lid-sections or with separate lids, and the boiling-up vessel a may be placed between the troughs instead of at the side, as shown.
