Abstract

A carton, especially suitable for use in a coil package, is formed from a folded cardboard blank and has a pair of oppositely disposed side walls, oppositely disposed side edges of these side walls each having an integral flap, one of which overlies and can be secured to the other. The first flap has a slot inclined at an acute angle to this side edge and the second flap has a line of perforations which, when the second flap overlies the other, overlies the slot in the other flap. When it is desired to reclose the carton temporarily, the second flap is folded along the line of perforations to form an ear of such a shape that, when the second flap is folded to overlie the first flap, the ear engages in the slot in the first flap and resists separation of the flaps. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improved carton This invention relates to cartons formed from at least one folded blank of cardboard or plastics material and having at least one pair of oppositely disposed side walls, which side walls have along a pair of oppositely disposed side edges integral flaps which, when folded one on top of the other and secured together, serve to close the carton. A carton of this construction will, where convenient, hereinafter be referred to as "a carton of the kind described".
The invention is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with a carton of the kind described which forms a part of a coil package as described and claimed in the specification of our co-pending Patent Application No: 8332946, which coil package comprises a closable carton of the kind described, said pair of oppositely disposed side walls constituting major side walls of the carton and each of which major side walls having an aperture in substantially axial alignment with the aperture of the major side wall; a pair of separately formed substantially flat reel flanges, each of which reel flanges is in interfacial contact with or is adjacent to the inner face of one of the major side walls and each of which reel flanges has an aperture in substantially axial alignmenu with the apertures of the major side walls; a coil of wire positioned between and bounding the apertures in the reel flanges; and, extending between parts of the reel flanges bounding said aligned apertures, a substantially rigid hollow hub, each reel flange being restrained against movement in a direction away from its adjacent major side wall.
When a user of the coil package wishes to use some of the wire on the coil, he breaks the means securing the two flaps together and folds them back to open the carton, disengages from the major side walls the means restraining the reel flanges against movement away from the major side walls and removes the reel carrying the coil of wire from the carton. After use of some of the coil of wire has taken place, the reel carrying the unused portion of the coil wire is re-inserted into the carton and the flaps are folded one on top of the other.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved carton of the kind described which includes means for effecting temporary closure of the carton after use of some of the contents of the carton has taken place.
According to the invention we provide an improved carton formed from at least one folded blank of cardboard or plastics material and having at least one pair of oppositely disposed side walls, oppositely disposed side edges of said side walls each having an integral flap, one of which overlies and can be secured to the other, wherein the first of said flaps has at least one slot which extends therethrough and which is inclined at an acute angle to said side edge of the wall and the second of which flaps has a line of perforations or other line of weakness which, when one flap overlies the other, overlies or underlies said slot in the other flap, the arrangement being such that, when it is desired to reclose the carton temporarily, said second flap is folded along said line of perforations or other line of weakness to form an ear of such a shape that, when the second flap is folded to overlie the first flap, the ear will engage in the slot in the first flap and will resist separation of the flaps.
Preferably, the first flap has a slot extending across each corner of the flap from the side edge integral with the side wall towards the adjoining edge of the flap and the second flap has a line of perforations or other line of weakness which extends across each free corner of the flap from one side edge to a slit extending inwardly from the adjoining edge to form an ear of quadrilateral shape, the arrangement being such that when the ear is folded along said line the side edge of the ear constituted by one boundary edge of said slit serves as a shoulder which will bear against the undersurface of the first flap in which the associated slot is formed to resist withdrawal of the ear from the slot. The slits preferably extend inwardly from opposite edges of the second flap in a direction substantially parallel to the side edge integral with the side wall of the carton.
The invention also includes a coil package as claimed in the specification of our co-pending Patent Application No: 8332946, wherein the closable carton is an improved carton as hereinbefore described.
The invention is further illustrated, by way of example, by the accompanying informal drawing which shows two fragmental perspective views of the preferred carton, one with the carton open and the other with the carton temporarily closed.
1. A carton of the kind described formed from at least one folded blank of carboard or plastics material and having at least one pair of oppositely disposed side walls, oppositely disposed side edges of said side walls each having an integral flap, one of which overlies and can be secured to the other, wherein the first of said flaps has at least one slot which extends therethrough and which is inclined at an acute angle to said side edge of the wall and the second of which flaps has a line of perforations or other line of weakness which, when one flap overlies the other, overlies or underlies said slot in the flap, the arrangement being such that, when it is desired to reclose the carton temporarily, said second flap is folded along said line of perforations or other line of weakness to form an ear of such a shape that, when the second flap is folded to overlie the first flap, the ear will engage in the slot in the first flap and will resist separation of the flaps.
2. A carton as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the first flap has a slot extending across each corner of the flap from adjacent the side edge integral with the side wall towards the adjoining edge of the flap and the second flap has a line of perforations or other line of weakness which extends across each free corner of the flap from one side edge to a slit extending inwardly from the adjoining edge to form an ear of quadrilateral shape, the arrangement being such that when the ear is folded along said line the
