Abstract

A stubble/weed burner which has the advantages of controlling a burn by means of using plough shares and cultivators. It also will minimise the soot and ash that omitted from a free burn, thus preventing a public nuisance and also conforming with the National Farmers Union guide for stubble burning. A hood 1 encloses burners 4 and is fitted with filters 2 and chimneys 3. Plough shares 7 and a timed cultivator 8 are attached to the hood, and the apparatus can be fitted to the three-point linkage of a tractor. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Stubble/weed burner This invention is largely for agricultural use but may be scaled down for horticultural use.
Stubble burning is common practice which serves to clear stubble ready for cultivation, also killing many weeds and seeds, but it causes a public nuisance by sending up thousands of little pieces of ash and where a burn goes out of control can cause untold damage to surrounding areas.
This invention is intended to control the burn and considerably reduce airborne ash. It comprises of several burners in an enclosed body which has chimneys. In these chimneys are filters to trap the ash, this then is returned to the ground and scurried in by the cultivators mounted behind the machine. The whole machine is tractor mounted with a front mounted tank for fuel.
Stubble/weed Burner relating to the accompanyng drawings: Figure 1 shows the rear elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the side elevation of the invention and others needed for towing and fuel storage.
Figure 3 shows detail of filter fitment for chimneys.
Figure 4 shows conventional type of burner that could be used.
Referring to Fig. 1, the invention comprises of a large metal body 1 with sloping sides supporting two filter boxes 2 on which there is a chimney 3. Inside the body there are mounted a number of burners 4 using conventional five thirty second gas oil, controlled by a conventional type fan 5. Also mounted inside the body are deflectors 6 to encourage the smoke and ash to go toward the filter boxes 2. Attached to the outside of the body there are adjustable plough shares 7, which will plough a small furrow either side of the machine to act as a firebreak and prevent spread of burn, therefore making the burn controllable. Fitted to the rear of the body 1 is a rigid tined cultivator 8 which is hinged 9 for easy transporting. This cultivator 8 is intended to scurry the surface immediately behind the burn, breaking up persistent burning thus preventing the spread of burn, also mixing ash with the soil.
The whole invention as shown in Fig. 2 is tractor 10 mounted on a three point linkage 11. Fitted to the front of the tractor is a frame 1 2 suitable for carrying a 500 litre or 1000 litre tank 1 3. All controls for burner and safety equipment are housed inside the tractor cab 1 4. Pipes carrying gas oil must be fitted with regular non-return valves, anti-flashback arresters and automatic cutout safety features.
As the body 1 is lowered to the ground the burners 4 are ignited electrically by the driver of the tractor. As the tractor moves over the ground a furrow is pulled either side of the body 1 by the plough shares 7 and and cultivated by tined cultivator 8. Smoke and ash are carried upwards inside body 1 toward filter boxes 2. The filter boxes each contain a filter as shown in Fig. 3. The filter is comprised of a frame 1 5 fitted with several angled plates 1 6 all with cutouts 1 7 at their base.As the smoke is deflected to the filters it will carry with it ash and soot, these have to pass in a zig-zag motion over the angled plates 16, in doing so the ash and soot will be trapped and fall down to the base of the metal plates 16, because of cutouts 1 7 they will continue to fall back down inside the body 1 and be returned to the soil by the cultivator 8 as it passes over.
The burner as shown in Fig. 4 is a conventional type burner used in conjunction with five thirty second gas oil. It is housed inside a shaped box 4 with the bottom open to help deflect the flame to the ground. The burner comprises of an atomiser 1 8 fed with fuel through pipes 1 9 from the tractor mounted tank 1 3. Ignited by electrodes controlled by electrics 21 from tractor.
1. A Stubble/Weed burner comprising burners covered by metal body with filters and chimneys fitted, to trap ash and soot.
Also fitted to metal body are plough shares and a tined cultivator to prevent burn spread.
2. A Stubble/Weed burner as in Claim 1 using conventional Five Thirty second gas oil.
3. A Stubble/Weed burner as in Claim 2 fitted with a conventional burner.
4. A Stubble/Weed burner as in Claim 1 to prevent the spread of uncontrolled burn.
5. A Stubble/Weed burner as in Claim 1 to prevent the ash and soot from causing a public nuisance.
