Abstract

A draught excluder 10 more particularly for doors comprises a back plate 11 attached by screws 13 to the lower edge 12 of a door. An elongated brush strip 17 is slidably located in a channel- shaped section 14 of the back plate and the screws 13 are covered by a cover plate 21 which slidably fits flanges 22 and 23 on the back plate. The assembly is completed by end plugs 28. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Draught excluder This invention relates to draught excluders and like seals more particularly for doors, but which are also applicable for attachment to the surfaces of partitions, sliding windows and like structures. Although the draught excluder or other seal of the invention is particularly intended for attachment to the door or other structure by means of attachment devices such as screws, the draught excluder or seal may be equally attached using alternative means, such as self-adhesive strips. The use of such adhesive strips will enable the draught excluder or other seal of the invention to be fitted to glass structures such as windows thus overcoming the risk of damage to the glass, for example by drilling.
According to the invention there is provided a draught excluder for a structure such as a door, said draught excluder comprising an elongated back plate adapted for attachment along or near an edge of said structure, fixing means, such as screws, located along the length of said plate for attaching the draught excluder to said structure, an open-sided channel formed on said plate and extending longitudinally thereof, an elongated brush strip slidably mounted in said channel with the ends of the brush fibres extending through said open-side of said channel to form the sealing member, and means associated with said channel for covering said fixing means when the draught excluder is mounted on said structure.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the back plate is formed additionally with upper and lower flanges which thereafter permit the fitting by a longitudinal sliding movement of a cover plate adapted to hide the fixing screws and to present a pleasing exterior appearance to the draught excluder or seal. The draught excluder or seal of the invention is then completed by the fixing of moulded end caps which act as plugs fitting the open-ended box-like section formed by the inter-connected back and cover plate. The end caps additionally hold the plates in assembled relationship.
In an alternative embodiment the longitudinal channel slidably receiving the brush strip is located along or adjacent the upper longitudinal edge of the metal back plate so that the depending fibres of the brush strip hide the fixing screws during use.
The elongated brush strip fitting the draught excluder or like seal of the invention preferably comprises a plurality of brush fibres which are looped around a wire core and which are then held in place in a metal channel by means of cleating or other locking means.
The invention relates not only to the constructional features of the draught excluder or seal as set out above but also to the method of assembly on a fixed structure.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood the preferred embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view partly in section of the preferred embodiment of the draught excluder or seal of the invention showing its fitting to a supporting door and the assembly therein of the brush strip; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the draught excluder taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and showing in particular the fitting of the cover plate on flanges of the back plate; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the draught excluder or seal of the invention.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings it will be seen that the draught excluder or seal 10 comprises firstly an elongated backing or fixing plate 11 which is preferably extruded in a metal such as aluminium. The backing plate 11 is conveniently supplied in predetermined lengths but may of course be cut to a desired size to fit the supporting structure which is shown as the bottom edge of a door 12.
The backing plate 11 is affixed to the bottom edge of the door 12 by means of screws 13 as shown and which are located at intervals along its length.
Alternatively, for glass fitting the plate 11 may be attached by a double sided adhesive strip (not shown).
The backing plate 11 is extruded with an integral channel shaped section 14 which extends outwardly from above the lower inturned edge 15 of the plate, the section 14 having an open lower side 16 providing a longitudinal slot of a width less than that of the channel section.
The channel shaped section 14 is adapted to receive slidably at either of its open ends a sealing member which comprises a brush strip 17 made by looping a plurality of nylon fibres 18 over a wire core 19. The assembly of brush fibres is then locked into a metal channel 20, for example by cleating, so that shedding of the fibres is eliminated.
The resultant brush strip 17 is slidably mounted in the channel section 14 with the brush fibres 18 extending through the longitudinal slot 16 as shown.
The length of the brush strip 17 conforms to that of the back plate 11.
In order to hide the fixing screws 13 and to present a more pleasing exterior appearance to the draught excluder or seal 10 a cover plate 21 is attached to the back plate 11. The cover plate 21 preferably is also extruded in aluminium or a suitable metal and is slidably mounted as shown in Figure 2 on the back plate 11 by means of inter-engaging flanges. To this end the back plate 11 is formed with an upper outwardly projecting flange 22 and a lower projecting flange section 23 which provides a longitudinal groove 24 and also an internal shoulder 35 which provides one side of the slot 16 of the channel shaped section 14.The cover plate 21 is basically of right-angled section (see Figure 2) having a lower inturned flange 25 adapted to slidably engage the longitudinal groove 24 and an upper flange section 26 which provides a groove 27 adapted to slidably engage flange 22 of the back plate 11. Figure 2 indicates possible dimensions for a preferred embodiment of the draught excluder or seal and as shown dimension A may be 1 Omm, dimension B 28mm, and dimension C 14.5mm.
Referring now to Figure 1,this drawing shows the draught excluder fitted to the door 12 and the assembly as now described is completed by the provision of a pair of end members 28 which are moulded from a suitable plastics material, coloured if desired, and which act as plugs having an inward projection 29 which snugly fits the space 30 provided in the box-like section of the draught excluder or seal as shown more particularly in Figure 2. The end caps or plugs 28 enchance the appearance of the draught excluder or seal and additionally maintain the parts in assembled relationship.
Figure 3 shows a modified embodiment of the door seal in which the channel-shaped section 14 for receiving the brush strip 17 extends outwardly from the upper edge 31 of the plate 11. In this embodiment the fixing screws 13 in the plate 11 are positioned below the channel shaped section 14 and are thus covered by the brush fibres 18 of the brush strip 17 when the draught excluder 10 is mounted on the door or other structure 12. In this embodiment the fibres of the brush strip are obviously longer so as to provide the necessary seal below the level of the door.
The invention provides a draught excluder or seal which can be fixedly mounted in a predetermined position and which acts not only to reduce draughts but will keep out rodents and dust due to the effectiveness of the brush fibres. Each fibre is able to move independently and to follow uneven contours thereby effectively sealing irregular gaps. The fibres slide easily over all surfaces and are extremely durable as they will not age, crack or harden.
