Abstract

Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-An hydraulic variable-speed gear of the pump and motor type comprises a fixed casing a, Fig. 1, a cylinder block rotating with the driving shaft b, adjustable displacers d, e and a valve plate f on the driven shaft, and a cylinder block h which is prevented from rotating in one direction but is capable of free rotation or rotation at a restricted rate in the other direction. The control of the block h may be effected by a clutch disposed between it and the casing, and the displacers d, e may be adjusted by axially movable shafts k, m, one of which may be hollow to serve for the passage of replenishing oil through ports r to the valve plate, which may have vanes to act as a centrifugal pump and assist in maintaining the liquid supply. Another arrangement for adjusting the displacers comprises an axially movable rod 20, Fig. 10, with pins 25, 26 engaging levers 21, 22 pivoted to the displacers and fulcrummed at 23, 24. In modifications, the block h may be connected to the driving or driven shaft through a one-way clutch and single or multi-speed gearing, or as shown in Fig. 8 to both shafts, the operative shaft being that which will drive the block at the greater speed, and the clutch in all these forms permitting the block to over-run. A balance gear may be interposed in the gear, with its sun wheels 18, 19, Fig. 9, connected to the block g and driven shaft c respectively, or with its sun wheels connected to the driven and driving shafts and its planet carrier to the block g. Mechanical couplings 3, 16 may be provided.
