Abstract

203,006. Golby, F. W., (Baker Steam Motor Car & Manufacturing Co.). March 27, 1922. Spray burners; flame deflectors. - A hydrocarbon burner comprises a double wall surrounding a combustion chamber with an air space between the walls, the inner wall having an opening for the flow of air into the combustion chamber, and means for delivering fuel into the chamber opposite the air opening. The burner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a pan 10 of circular or other shape having spaced inner and outer walls 11, 12 and bottoms 13, 14. A stream of liquid fuel is sprayed into the pan from a nozzle 20 arranged m an opening in a neck portion 16 connecting the walls 11, 12. Air from a fan or blower is delivered through a radial pipe 29 to the space between the walls 11, 12 and after flowing around the inner wall enters the pan through a nozzle 27 diametrically opposite the fuel nozzle openings 15. The fuel and air streams impinge on one another in the pan which forms the combustion chamber. The air is preheated by its passage between the walls 11, 12 and bottoms 13, 14 and overheating of the inner wall and bottom is prevented. The combustion is started by means of a spark plug 22 arranged in a boss 21 in the wall 11 and having its electrode 23 projecting in the opening 15. The other electrode 24 is carried by the wall 12. A restricted amount of air is admitted through apertures 25 in the neck 16 to facilitate ignition. In a modification shown in Fig. 5, the walls 11', 12<1> and bottoms 13<1>, 14' of the pan are of sheet metal and the annular top 30' between the walls 11', 12' is flared or inclined and provided with an upstanding flange 31'to receive a boiler jacket. A crescent-shaped baffle 34<1> having its inner edge slightly arched is provided above the opening 15' to prevent the flames being blown towards the fuel nozzle side of the burner. The fuel nozzle 20' and spark plug are carried by a detachable plate 18<1> and the lower electrode 24<1> is removably secured to the wall 12'. The air inlet pipe to the space between the walls 11', 12' is tangentially arranged. A lining of refractory or heat insu:lating material may be provided within the wall 12' and bottom 14<1>.
