Abstract

A filter (4) has a supporting mesh- like backing (5) to which are secured a plurality of elongate fibres (6). The elongate fibres (6) in use are flattened by the fluid flow against the supporting backing (5) so as to form a matted mass of fibres which constitutes the filter bed. The filter is cleaned by reverse flow of fluid which aligns the fibres and releases trapped impurities. <IMAGE>
