Abstract

An apparatus for controlling the depth of weld penetration during a welding operation comprises a plurality of optical fibres 2. One end of each optical fibre is supported by a member adjacent to the rear surface of a workpiece 4 to be welded so that said ends are positioned at a predetermined distance from and present a predetermined array towards the rear surface of the workpiece along the proposed weld line. The opposite end of each optical fibre is positioned immediately adjacent a radiation detector 12 so that on relative movement between an electrode 22 for effecting the weld and the workpiece during a welding operation, the detector senses radiation from the rear surface during a complete pass of the electrode along the weld line. Means 14 is provided for amplifying the detector output to provide a control signal for controlling the speed of electrode 22 or the power supplied thereto. As shown, gas backing is used, argon being introduced via nipple 20. <IMAGE>
