Abstract
In an energy storage system, flywheels (7) are arranged in pairs with the flywheels of the or each pair being contra-rotating and positively mechanically interconnected, so as to substantially cancel out precession and to ensure that the flywheels of the or each pair do not get out of synchronisation. Each flywheel runs in a vacuum chamber (8) and is connected to input-output power shaft (1) via clutches (4, 6), reduction gearing (5) and bevel gearing (3). <IMAGE>
