Abstract

A herbicidal 4-(2-pyridyloxy) phenoxyvaleric acid derivative has the following general formula (I):- <IMAGE> wherein X is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; Y is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; and Z<1> is a hydroxy group; a (C1-C6)alkoxy group in which the alkyl moiety thereof may be substituted with 1 to 3 halogen atoms; a (C1-C4)alkoxy- (C1-C4)alkoxy group; a (C2-C4)alkenyloxy group; a (C2-C4)alkynyloxy group; a (C3-C6)cycloalkoxy group in which the cycloalkyl moiety thereof may be substituted with a (C1-C4)alkyl group; a (C1-C4)alkoxycarbonyl(C1-C4)alkoxy group; a phenoxy group in which the aryl moiety thereof may be substituted with 1 to 3 halogen atoms or a (C1-C4)alkyl group; a benzyloxy group; a glycidyloxy group; a (C1-C4)alkylthio group; a (C2-C4)alkenylthio group; a phenylthio group in which the aryl moiety thereof may be substituted with 1 to 3 halogen atoms or a (C1-C4)alkyl group; an amino group; a (C1-C4)alkylamino group; a (C1-C4)alkoxycarbonylmethylamino group; a hydroxycarbonylmethylamino group; a pyridine-2-ylamino group; or an -O-cation.
