Abstract

A tensioning roller for web tens ioning, e.g. in rotary printing machines, includes a hollow cylinder (1) fixedly closed at one end (2) and closed at the other (5) by an axially displaceable piston (6). A resiliently deformable outer shell (11) is fixed at each end to the cylinder, so as to define with the cylinder an annular gap in communication with the interior of the cylinder by means of a number of passages (13) through the circumferential wall of the cylinder. The interior of the cylinder and the annular gap are filled with an incompressible pressure transmission medium (7), e.g. a gelatinous plastic mass, which on inward movement of the piston (6), forces the outer shell to expand and by increasing the diameter of the roller, in use increases the circumferential speed thereof. <IMAGE>
