Abstract

In the electromagnetic casting of molten metals (Cu and Cu alloys), a liquid coolant (12) is directed onto the surface of the metal emerging from an inductor arrangement (11) and a container (10), which may have an apertured or open-pored bottom, is included for feeding molten metal to the solidifying region. An ingot (15) is formed on a withdrawal stool 16 at a location spaced from the container (10). The need for strict control of molten metal head is largely or wholly avoided. A graphite layer may cover the melt top surface and an inert gas film may be provided between the wall of container 10 and the adjacent metal. <IMAGE>
