Abstract

A method of separating particles according at least to their respective densities which includes the steps of exposing the particles in a suitable dielectric medium to an electric field the intensity of which varies in a vertical direction, the particles thereby being stratified at least according to their respective densities at positions in the dielectric medium where the gravity force on each particle is equal to an upwardly acting electrostatic force exerted by the electric field on the particle, and separating strata of the particles from one another. The dielectric medium may be a suspension of aluminium or other metal particles of diameter less than 100 Angstroms in kerosene or other organic liquid. The electric field is provided by pairs of hyperbolic or other electrodes 10, 12. <IMAGE>
