Abstract

A bevel gear contra-rotating transmission 100, e.g. for a wind turbine, has two shafts 106, 110 coupled to a reversing mechanism 102 which enables the shafts to be rotated at the same speed but in opposite rotational directions. The reversing mechanism 102 includes two bevel gear wheels 104,108 coupled to the two shafts 106,110, and further bevel gear wheels 112 supported by carrier 114 which engage with the two bevel gear wheels 104,108. Reversing mechanism 102 is supported by a flexible coupling means 114 between housing 122 and bevel gear carrier 114. The flexible coupling 114 comprises first and second crowned spline arrangement 118, 120 having equally spaced segments spanning 30o or teeth spanning 360o. This arrangement achieves even load sharing between gear meshes. First and second turbines are connected to the shafts 106, 110 and a generator is connected to an output side of shaft 106. In another embodiment, propellers replace the turbines and an engine replaces the generator.
